I had the chance to drive a MINI Cooper D in Europe. It's great for day-to-day driving--good torque even down low. It's not as fun to string out on a quiet road, though, with such a low redline... so here, in Canada, while gas prices are still (relatively) reasonable, I'll stick with my petrol engine.

In terms of commuting, diesel certainly makes sense, though! And they can be fun to drive (like the 335d). It's just they're a different animal.

Yes.

Diesel is superior to a gas engine in every respect. I've driven many in europe. Awesome motors..

I wouldn't buy a diesel just for the torque.  I would buy one so I wouldn't have to change spark plugs and wires.

I am a big fan of diesels.  I would have no problems buying one.  Durability - torque is excellent.  Repairs my be something to consider down the road - maybe slightly higher.  Only thing I hate is the urea injection you have to adopt with BMW - Mercedes.  It would not be so bad if one could re-fill the empty urea tanks without having to visit the dealer.  At least some (VW etc) still get by without having to use the urea injection in the exhaust.

You only get to exchange that gripe to one about changing glow plugs and wires.   Grin

It would be interesting to know if one can reset the urea warning without going to the dealer.  I assume it's possible.

It's not so much the urea that bothers me - I am all for improving the environment - my gripe is that we have to go back to the dealer to get it done.  As far as I know you get several warnings then the system just shuts you down completely.  I am sure someone somewhere will figure out how to either bypass the system or a way to fill the tank without having to visit the dealer.  Everyone flushes this stuff down the toilet all day yet we have to go to the dealer to top us up?

I read somewhere that the  M-B urea tank gives warnings for some time before it is empty but... when it is empty the car will not run.  This seems like an opportunity for a software/hardware hacker to allow the car to run in limp-home mode at least.
