On my way home from work this morning, I averaged 94 US MPG (~2.5L/100kms). Average speed 80km/h. 2 stops. Isn't that crazy??

I bet the funds go to the 'new car' fund. |

What's a mile? What's a gallon?
2.5L/100km? Awesome! But, over what distance? I drove home from the climbing wall on Tuesday night, 44km with the T/C reading 3.2L/100km for the trip. Bet it would be worse on the way there... |

Interesting. I thought cars women get loose gas millage as they get older.
Fixed that right up. Cars usually do lose fuel economy as they age thanks to engine wear, etc. But, a well maintained car can have great mileage well past 200K km's. |

I thought so too. But I typically buy 4-5 year old cars and keep them for 10-11 years. I don't keep them so long that they end up being oil burners and candidates for new engines. Up to about 220,000km. I have never seen a dropoff in mileage while I've owned them. Our 1990 Dodge Spirit is still capable of 42mpg on the highway, as it has been since we bought it with 80,000km. It has twice the mileage now. Brand new cars are reputed to get better mileage after the engines are broken in. I read all sorts of theories about which makers supply tighter engines etc, but I've never heard of a study to back up these claims. And if it was true of our vehicle that we bought new, the effect was too small to be apparent. There is also a theory that as cars age, the bearings, engine parts etc. wear and loosen up. The cars become less "tight", but may roll with less resistance. Obviously when they get to oil burning condition, the engines probably will be losing performance and therefore efficiency as there's more compressin/blowby losses. |

I had a Mercedes 190E that I bought with low kms' and drove to 450K or so. At that high mileage, it still trundled along getting 11L/100km in city driving and 8L/100km on the highway. With care, a well made engine can deliver good fuel economy and performance past 400K. The trick is clean oil and filters and engine air filters too. |

Wow, 2.5L/100km. That's amazing! The oil companies won't be getting rich off you in the few years. That is unless you buy a gas drinking supercar to keep your insight company. |
