LOL I agree. I couldn't give a how nice the door welds are if the thing doesn't get me to work every day. A completely pointless aregument given Hyundai's warranties and comparable reliability with VW.

Yup.. Reliabiliyy means a lot for me.. And you know what,
i just had my first service done at 15000km (a full year after my purchase, cost me under 150) for a year..not too bad I say.
and not even a single problem.

Vw from the early 2000's sufferred reliability issue, but my previous 2006 jetta was problem free till a good 100000km.

That is my own personal experience which I think is a whole lot better than just looking at statistics.

dtep, envy your ride. I far prefer the Tiguan as well and the reliability has proven close enough. My parents have had a number of small issues with their Elantra whereas I've had one with the Golf, and I believe the VW will stand up over time better (although might be more expensive when something does require fixing), so to me it's negligible. I like the packaging adjustments they've made to Tiguan (such as adding the 6MT Comfortline, and Sport Pkg on Comfortlines), but it's unfortunate VW has continued to bump up the price. In '09 the base Highline had leather, Bi-Xenons, and silver roof rails standard for $38. The base 8 speaker touch screen audio system is decent one without Dynaudio, but I'd want the back-up camera. For me, since I don't want leather (and Hyundai forces you into it on higher times) I really prefer the Tiguan Comfortline loaded with the Tech and Sport packages until 2011MY when they added leatherette  Undecided

In any event, when looking at the two I was pleased with the Tucson (and REALLY love the style of the Sportage) but am completely mesmerized by how well the Tiguan checks all the boxes, is executed so well, and competes after a few years on the market. Granted, you pay for it - and the gap is considerable... but I'd be willing to. And despite it's small size and considering the premium pricing, many others are opting to as well.

Haha, but the laser welding, it's the shiznaught

Quite honestly though, if I wasn't built so large and I didn't care so much about product execution of details (whether it be the seating, controls and MFI, pana roof, general weightiness, etc) or the way it drives, the price premium would be MUCH harder to justify. Would think the majority of people can't see the value, or don't think it is value for the price premium. For me, I don't need 'the best', but know I'd have some element of unhappiness with my purchase.

Not sure what it is, but every time I scope a Tiguan out I truely love the thing, nearly everything about it, and I don't know of another vehicle on the market today where I feel the same way. Even just this morning passed a Sapphire Blue Tiguan Highline (super tall guy behind the wheel too) and was fawning over it. If I didn't drive so much and my decision was trumped by wanting the diesel, would have gone ahead and bought the damn thing.

As it is, looking forward to checking out the Ford C-Max at the auto show, thinking the Hybrid version of that would be right up my alley too since I don't think VW will be releasing a Tiguan TDI anytime soon, and I have a feeling beause of how mediocre it's selling in the US it'll be replaced by a different, larger North American suited model soon.

Oh wait, this is a Tucson thread, isn't it?  Shuffle

Yes, it is 10k difference IF you look at FINANCE, and that is FINANCE ONLY because Hyundai offers 0% interest. what if it is LEASE (which, in fact is very popular among car buyers).

VW Tiguan Highline w/ Tech package
MSRP with Frieght: $42,580
Lease with $0 down and 48 months (20k km/year) : $562.14 w/o tax
Total cost for 4 years: $26982.72

Hyundai Tucson Limited w/ Navi
MSRP with Freight: $36,009
Lease with $0 down and 48 months (20k km/year) : $531.95 w/o tax
Total cost for 4 years: $25533.60
leasing is popular, but i think more people prefer to finance.

yes, the difference is "only" $30/month, however, at the end of 48 months, then what??...you either get a new unit and continue paying $600+ month for a vehicle, or perhaps you might want to purchase the unit so you no longer have a monthly payment (or at least a smaller one)...the VW will be out of warranty, the Hyundai won't be...as well, the higher upfront cost will simply be owed on the balance if you buy it out, so you can't avoid paying the higher cost, you are simply deferring it.

Quote
Hmm let's see, leasing for 4 years, $1449.12 difference. And remember, there is a big lease market here in Canada. And when you come to think about it, $30 more a month gets you a Loaded Tiguan compared to the Tucson (which according to another poster, Tiguan also is considered to be a larger class than the Tucson).
the Tiguan and Tuscon are in the same class, not sure what you mean here.

Quote
See, you made it sound like a BIG difference is because Hyundai offers 0% finance, the 10k difference is due mainly to the interest you have to pay with VW(which you selected 60months, with the highest possible interest with the VW).
no, VW offers 1.9% on 60 months, Hyundai offers 0%, so they are comparable...where they do get silly is on 72 months, where VW was at 8.1%, but Hyundai is only 1.9% (that made the difference around $20k).

Quote
And yes, cash purchase price Tiguan is $40k+ for Navi model, but remember, that model has a LOT more than the Tucson. Is there a Tucson with memory seats? NO. Electric folding mirror with 'curb view'? NO. Rain sensor? NO. Soft touch? NO. Ambient lighting? Electronic Park Brake? NO. NO. The "Euro feel"(subjective)? NO.
I also have the Audi A4 Premium, and it also has exact same features as the Tiguan, actually the Tiguan has more features.
you better get some of those "premium features in the Tiguan, it's a lot more money.

Quote
And no offence, but that leather seats in the Tucson is no where near the quality of the VW ones, the leather in the Genesis coupe is nice, but that's a different story.
actually, you are wrong...most cars use "leatherette" in there base cars, unless you pay extra (BMW and Mercedes call it "Artico Leather")...Hyundai uses real soft quality leather in their Limited models (yes, even the Elantra)...in fact, it is just as soft as the $1500 optional leather i experienced in the C300 MB.

Quote
Next time if you go car shopping, look at those welding spots on door/window frame of the Hyundai, and then go look at VW with their single piece door frame. Look at the B-Pillar thickness, look at the headliner, look at the interior plastic. I can tell you most people will say all those nicer stuff in the VW is worth the extra $30/month lease. If you finance, yes it might not worth the 10k, but for people who lease or cash, they might realize the true value of the Tiguan with the minimal price difference.

if you are talking about door pillars, welds, etc...you don't know what you are talking about...the plants that make all of Hyundai's newest products (Tuscon, Elantra and Sonata) are among the most advanced manufacturing facilities on the planet...all of their new vehicles are 5 star safety rated and all safety features come standard on all trims...as well, their paint process is virtually identical to what MB uses at their facility...yes, their process is that good...Hyundai has invested BILLIONS into their vehicles (design, production, etc) and their continued success is the reward for their hard work.

Quote
FYI, I paid 38k plus tax for Highline Tiguan with Sport package (which includes adaptive xenon, 18", and aluminum roof rail). There are just so many features on the Tiguan that is not available even on the loaded Tucson. As to 38k Tiguan (w/quality material and high end features similar to the Audi class + leather) or 35k Tucson (for just leather/navi + standard features similar to the 24k Tucson), and especially when leasing only cost $30/month more. Is Tucson really the value? I wonder...
we'll see...in 4 years when your lease is up, you will have to decide...pay $22k and buy it (now out of warranty), go lease another one and continue paying $600/month, or do without and take the bus.
