05 jetta 1.8l turbo
« on: June 14, 2009, 12:01:12 pm »
Looking at a 05 jetta gls 1.8l turbo. Wondering if anyone knows if you have to burn 91 octane in them, Or if you can just run 87 octane. will the different octane levels efect your fuel mileage or not? any other must know info would be great aswell. also wondering if this engine needs full sythetic oil or not

No kidding. Use ONLY 91. And ONLY synthetic oil every 8k. Anything else, and you're in DEEEEEP :censor:. Make sure the car had oil changes every 8k WITH SYNTHETIC, if they can't prove anything. RUN AWAY.

The oil change will run you ~$100 every 8k. If that's a problem, then you should look at a different car as VW are not inexpensive to maintain.

will using a lesser fuel than 91 only effect mileage or will the engine run rough? the dealership is telling me it doesnt matter. what kind of mileage should I expect while driving normally, in the city and highway?

No idea about mileage but you absolutely want to run only 91 on that engine (and pretty much any turbo/supercharged one).

Is that a VW dealer? The 1.8T REQUIRES 91+ octane. You will get worse fuel economy with anything less than that, so there's no savings.
City ~11L/100km
Highway ~8L/100km
Obviously, it depends on how you drive. If you keep it off boost, you'll get better fuel economy.

Why are you cheaping out on gas anyways? What's the mileage on the car. If 15c/L is a problem, you don't want to know how much it costs to service that Jetta.

EPA:

Manual Transmission
city / highway
(L/100 km)
9.9 / 6.9

Automatic Transmission
city / highway
(L/100 km)   10.8 / 7.4

53k on the car, yes  it is a vw dealer. I figured they are just saying whatever it takes to get me to buy it, would a civic be a better car then a jetta for someone with a tighter budget

Exactly.

A Civic would be a more rational choice. Is there any warranty left on the Jetta, there should be another year left or so? Is it a certified-preowned, that comes with an additional 2yr/40,000km warranty? How long are you planning on keeping it?

planning on keeping it as long as possible, it does come pre-owned certified, with the 2yr 40k warranty, really like the car lots of power handles nice, rides nice. got them to drop $1000 from 17900 to 16900. and owning a dodge has really beaten up my faith with north american enginered vehicles

I owned an Audi with that engine and had no trouble with it.   I now own a GTI with the 2.0 turbo which was introduced in 2006.  If it were me and I just had to own a VW product I'd look for a 2006 with the 2.0 turbo. It would cost more but would probably work better for longer.

In my experience the 1.8 only runs properly on 91 octane.  I have read reports that the 2.0 will run on 89 but I have not tried it... I don't do enough miles per year nowadays to care about the extra cents/litre.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

It's a good car. It's just that I'm not sure if you know what you're getting yourself into. That's all.

 tighter budget

Then AVOID this car.  The timing belt on this car is an expensive job and needs to be done earlier than VW lists.  Repairs will be abnormally expensive after the 100k km mark.
