Picking up a new Suzuki B King tomorrow! **UPDATED**
« on: June 02, 2009, 06:22:14 pm »
A friend has purchased a new Suzuki B King.  It's my job to travel to the dealership a few hours away and pick it up and bring it home!

What's a B King?  It's a Suzuki Hayabusa-engined motorcycle.  Slightly better ergo than a Busa.  More of a standard.  What's NOT missing is the tremendous HP and TQ of the monster Busa mill.  Check out the dyno sheet below comparing it to a Busa.

Should make for an interesting, amusing day.  Will post a ride review when I get home!!

I was concerned when I saw the title of this thread - how was I going to congratulate you on your fantastic new bike without mentioning that the B-King is the most hideously ugly motorcycle ever produced?

I'm glad to hear to you're only riding it and not owning it. Thank God you can't see those exhaust cans from the saddle. Should be an exciting day!

Okay, the Busa ain't a pretty motorcycle.  But, it is lacking V-Max side scoops and a moto-cross exhaust system.  the 1300cc engine is SO good, though, can't blame 'em for building more bikes around it.  That 170hp is SO FAR below what it's capable of, it ridiculous.  It's politically difficult not to leave all those extra ponies on the table, as the bike already "needs" a 300km/h speed limiter.

But, they're there, just waiting.

As for ergos, just add a mild riser to the bars, and the Hayabusa ain't a bad sport touring bike.  It's a big chassis, not like the squished gixxer rides, and you can get pretty comfy on it.  If it feels like you're on your arms too much, just take 'er to 250 or so and sit up a bit...   ;D
No place I'd rather be...

Ok.  I left this morning at 7 am.  In the rain. Sigh.   :'(

So...the bike being traded in was a 2008 Honda VFR 800 VTEC with ABS.  This is a REALLY nice bike, and the v4 sounds and looks AMAZING with the Leo Vince Carbon slip-ons.  The sound is just glorious, and pretty unique in the motorcycle work.  Not overly loud...reminds me a bit of a small block Chevy or V8 sound.  Sounds much beefier than a V4, that's for sure!  The build quality is perfect, the ergos are very good, attention to details is flawless.  Decent power and great TQ for an 800.  The ABS works great!  Overall, this is a great all arounder.  My friend was just wanting more power...more TQ.   So the 800 had to go!

Ok...picking up the B King.  WOW!  This bike is big looking!  The side intakes make the gas tank look gargantuan.  His bike is the silver and black version.  It is quite stunning.  Despite the odd looking exhaust covers (plastic), this bike has TONS of curb appeal.  People stop and stare and ask questions.  This bike looks very cool, has attitude, and draws people to it when it is parked.  It has a look all its own.  Very neat IMO.

The dash panel is tiny, but very tidy.  Nice large tach...everything else is a digital read out.  The dash glows a pleasing cool blue.  When you first turn the key, the dash starts up...and all the little LEDS cluster together then disintegrate to form the words "B King".  Neato!  Digital dash has speedo, gear, fuel level, two trip computers, avg speed, engine temp, etc..Basically just the stuff you need to ride!

Sitting on the bike it feels pretty heavy lifting it off the side stand.  578 lbs full of fuel makes this bike no lightweight.  If feels small in a few ways though.  First, apart from the small dash, there is NOTHING ahead of the bars giving the illusion of "small".  More impressively, once under way, the weight seems to vanish.  It feels lighter than a Busa even though it's 15lbs more.  Credit goes to the nearly bolt upright seating position and the tall, long motocross-style handlebars.  Plenty of leverage for slinging this weight around, if needed.  But if feels light on it's feet.  I wasn't expecting this, and its a nice surprise.

Ok.  Let's have some fun! After adjusting the mirrors (pretty good ones!!), it's time to feel the power.  I pin the throttle to the stop.  The bike explodes forward.  The front tire skims the pavement.  A steering damper keeps things in check.  The power is just..explosive.  Any gear, any RPM, anytime!  The power is just THERE.  And lots of it! It's actually geared a bit tighter than a Busa....so it feels every bit as fast despite the extra weight and slight HP loss.  This bike is Billy Bad Ass.  There may only be a bike or two that would give this machine a run for it's money in a straight line...a Busa or ZX14.  No standard style bike would be able to take it, that's for sure.  On the highway doing 115 km/h registers almost 4,000 RPM in 6th gear.  A twist of the wrist even at that speed and the bike just lunges forward.  Good times!!   ;D

Oh yea...there's also a "B" mode for the engine.  You push a button and the ECU runs a different map.  In this set-up, the power falls down to ~120 (from 161) and TQ to about ~70 (down from 98).  It's actually not bad!  Acceleration wise, it reminds me of a 600cc bike...but with plenty of extra TQ.  I could see some people being totally content with this setting and enjoying the bike.  I liked "A" mode though. :)

Ergos were good.  Seat is kinda hard and my butt was a bit sore after 200 kms.  I didn't mind the wind blast at all, since it hits in the chest.  There was no buffeting around my helmet.  While I wouldn't take it on a purely highway trip, it would work for short stretches.  It shines though when driven on county roads...twisty or otherwise.  Handling is good.  Without even trying hard, I was within 1/2" of the tire edge.  Back tire is a HUGE 200 series.  Fat.  Brakes are great and stops the bike easily.

Anyways...I may be missing a thing or two.  But that's pretty much it.  Bike rides nice, has TONS of power and handles nice.  A very nice bike with unique looks and a killer powerplant.

SWEET!  Edit: Just noticed it's your friend's bike and not yours.  Boo...get one for yourself too...

My only beef with the B-King is its name.  The concept was supercharged and was called the "Boost King."  The production model kept the aesthetic but lost the blower, but it's still called "B-King."  What does the "B" stand for if not "Boost"?

Naming issues aside, it's one hell of a musclebike from what I've read.  But I've got a weakness for naked Suzooks, if you haven't already picked up ;) And SiRCivic is wrong...it looks awesome!  (In a Transformers sort of way).

A supercharged 1300 from the factory?   :o

Those big inch bikes already come under the scrutiny of the safety-nazis all the time.  I see why they basically dropped the stock engine in there.

But, this is a long serving engine with a TON of hp enhancing options.  Without much problem you can have 220rwhp.  With some determination and fading sanity, 350hp is very do-able.  With a complete loss of sanity, a big turbo, 1600cc bore-out, massive top end rework, giant injectors and new ECU, and a desire to do 300km/h wheelies, 500hp can be done.

500 on a Busa? No problemo. 300k wheelies? Oh of course.

Cool! Thanks for the review. Seems in concept like the old V-max, affordable monster standard. The idea seems to have legs, they sold those for a billion years seemingly unchanged.

The very first thing any insurer in Ontario asks about a bike is "Is it turbo-charged or supercharged?"  If you say yes the conversation ends.

Yeah, but there's no factory supercharged or turbocharged bikes on the market (i.e., no bikes where the chassis and brakes were originally designed to handle that power).  I'm sure it's hard to get anybody to insure any tuner bike, whether it's forced induction or naturally aspirated.

I don't see why a factory-supercharged Boost King with a supercharged 1300cc engine would be that much crazier than, say, the second-generation VMAX with a 1700cc V4.  I'm assuming the supercharger would not be unreasonably huge...but factory designs always look for tractability and reliability as well as power, so I'm sure it would be reasonable.

Turbo-charged?? Supercharged?? I read that NASA is retiring the Space Shuttle. Are you talking about a replacement for it. If you build a ramp, you could use these to visit the Space Station...

Can you imagine the misery of trying to stick to a decent speed, lets say less than double the posted limit with such beasts? My 145 hp FJR1300 was unhappy at anything less than 150Kph. Stable as a rock at 240. :)

That's why I moved to a smaller bike. Perfectly happy at 120. Don't even need to slow down for off-ramps..

But the people like you and me who are content with a midsizer aren't the ones who anything like the B-King and VMAX are aimed at.  For those who are into drag-bike insanity, why not go all the way?  Every other genre of bikes does.  Goldwing is a tourer carried to its absurd conclusion; Desmosedici is a sportbike carried to its absurd conclusion; R1200GS Adventure is the adventure-tourer carried to its absurd conclusion; Ural is the retro-bike carried to its absurd conclusion; etc.

Turbo bikes were tried in the early '80s with the the Suzuki XN85, the Kawasaki GPZ 750 turbo, the  Honda CX650 turbo and Yamaha Seca 650 turbo. The general consensus at the time was the extra weight and complexity of the turbo was not worth it and that extra displacement was a better way to go.

But really, on a 600lb bike, who in heck needs more power? It's a death wish as it is. Thank God we have graduated licencing here.
