Emissions Standards for Gas-Powered Two-Wheeled Toys
« on: June 02, 2009, 08:26:46 am »
Are emissions controls required on gas powered two-wheeled toys such as motorcycles and scooters?  Are they as strict as with passenger cars?  Just wondering because I smell a lot more coming out of the tailpipes of the motorcycles that pass me on my morning bike commute than I do from cars.

If emissions regulations for motorcycles and scooters are not as stringent, shouldn't they be?
Opinions are like noses; everyone has one.

They should be I think.   Some motorcycles have engines as big as some small cars so logically they should meet the same rules.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Yes, there are emissions standards for motorcycles and scooters.

No, they are nowhere near as stringent as emissions standards for cars.

In Ontario I've never seen a bike tested for emissions, so my guess there isn't any post sale regulations in place. It's a shame of course, as thousands of 2 stroke engines used in scooters and various landscaping equipment are making people sick. From what I heard the reason why in Mexico so many die of the same strain of flu we have here is supposedly air pollution. It weakens the immune system and then chances of recovery diminish.
I think there should be a single Canada wide standard for emissions based on how much crap is produced from 1 litre of fuel burnt. There maybe transition stage of course, say 5 years, but in the end EVERYTHING, from a lawn mower to a front loader to a truck must comply to the standard. It's not fair to have a Corolla owner to pass the test every 2 years but have hw 401 full of smog belching trucks that amount to hundreds of cars each, while the only excuse is it might hurt the economy if strict regulations are passed. We loose more money on health care year after year, so why not make those who pollute air pay by either upgrading their engines or else in fines for the damages they cause to the environment and ppl around... It all comes down to the fact that we need a new stronger and responsible leadership in Ottawa.

There are SOME...but only required on some Euro bikes.  The Japanese do it voluntarily.  Most bikes do not have cat converters on them...

Actually I see more stuff belching out of the older GM city buses and GO  buses than out of trucks.  Possibly because they are run by governments who have no reason to bother with fuel economy whereas a private company, be it an owner -operator or a bigger concern DO worry about fleet economy.    Diesel smoke = wasted fuel.

My KTM 690E has a catalytic converter and very lean mapping on the fuel injection. So far I've left it alone, but a cat-less muffler and a richer FI map apparently do wonders for the bike. For "closed course" use only, of course.  ;)

My wife's KLX250 didn't come with a cat, but did come jetted ridiculously lean. Apparently the extra-lean jetting lets it pass California emission laws. Since we're not riding in California, an aftermarket exhaust and proper jetting have awakened the little bike nicely.

And my wife's two-stroke KX100? I actually had to jet it a little leaner because of the altitude here, but running pre-mix at 32-1, it still belches out a hefty blue haze.

My Aprilia Shiver 750 has a cat and fuel injection. It meets Euro 3 standards.

2 strokes toys are pretty well off the market.  Motorcycles, jet skis, ATVs, outboard motors and soon all Sleds with the exception of the Bombardier lean burn 2 strokes are now 4 strokes.  No need for more regulation.  ::) :P  Like mentioned, more crap comes out of buses than all the 4 stroke toys in the province combined.

More regulation = higher prices = less availability for the average moron citizen = less business = less tax revenue.

For the urban folks that just crave regulation focus your phobia on farmers and their diesels.  Take away their tractors, harvesters, grain trucks.  Regulate their equipment to the point that we as a province stop growing food.  Great pay day that will be.  :)

All new buses are US07 emissions compliants and produce very little emissions. Next year we move to US10 and these will produce next to nothing. 1 bus with 50 peoples on board pollutes probably less than 50 peoples on 50 motorcycles.

This being said, excuse me, I've got to ride the Aprilia to work....:)
