Bike Paths

Here in Ottawa, what were originally conceived as bike paths have become mostly "recreational pathways" (link: http://tinyurl.com/omz6p5) as blading, strolling, pramming, running and other such detritus activities have slowly taken over.  I'm wondering if others on this forum have noticed the same thing where they live?  The recreational pathways are the most dangerous place to ride a bike nowadays.

Barcelona has a great system, there are bikes everywhere

Victoria has such pathways.  They're used for a wide variety of stuff, but I've found biking on them is still very enjoyable.  As long as the paths are decently wide and you have a bell or horn, there's no reason everyone can't share the space.
