Recommendations for 18" *winter* tires for an AWD?

I know this is too late and too early  ;) but even so I am looking ahead, planning for winter tires for an AWD Chevrolet Traverse. Its current all season OEM tires are the Good Year Fortera P255/65R18  109S. (This Traverse comes with the Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor).

Any recommendations for 18" winter tires for the 09/10 winter season?

Slightly off topic but would 17" fit?
Might save a lot of cash over time to have 17s on a separate set of rims and avoid the remounting etc.
