Porsche has been planning to take control of Volkswagen for several months now, with the sports car maker finally making its move on Wednesday. Porsche announced its integration with Volkswagen earlier today, creating a single entity with 10 underlying brands.

Porsche’s move to takeover VW has stalled in the recent months, but recent meetings between both sides spurred the decision. “In the final structure, 10 brands shall stand below an integrative leading company alongside each other, whereby the independence of all brands and explicitly also of Porsche shall be ensured,” a statement said. Volkswagen currently controls 9 brands, with the Porsche-family owned Porsche representing the 10th.

Despite the news, Porsche has indefinitely postponed its plan to take a 75 percent stake in VW. Porsche cites worsening economic conditions for the decision, with industry experts estimating the German automaker would need to raise an additional 13 billion euros to top the 75 percent mark. According to Automotive News, Porsche currently owns a 51 percent stake of VW.

Details will be hammered out in the next four weeks as Porsche officials meet with the German state of Lower Saxony – one of VW’s largest stakeholders

I thought this already happened back in March.  Have I been having psychic visions again? ???

Would that put the VW Group into number one position?

They've been trying to make this happen for a while, but they had a few false starts due to legal trouble.

So other than legal ramifications and maybe some reduced overhead at corporate what does this mean?

I really don't know? Does it mean VWs become more "Porsche" like or soes it mean Porsches become more Skoda like?

Internet forum version:

Because Porsche is the Typhoid Mary of awesomeness.  Everything it touches develops an acute case of the awesomes.

Real-life discussion version:

Because of trickle-down platforms.  A mid-engine, RWD Volkswagen BlueSport roadster is a no-brainer.  Boxster chassis, VW drivetrain, interior, badge, and dealership, selling for about US$30,000-$35,000 (what an S2000 goes for down here).

Because of trickle-down engineering.  Porsche, in addition to making fabulous performance cars, has developed a balance of fuel economy and power few others can match.  Example: the new direct-inject 911 Carrera S makes 385 horsepower and has the same fuel economy rating as my 180 hp (stock) Jetta.  Amazing.

Because economies of scale for Porsche on things like batteries, seat heaters, air conditioning systems, base sound systems, windshield wipers mechanisms, airbags, etc  (which can now be purchased en masse from VWAG's suppliers) will help drive down the price of stripped Carreras and Caymans.

Because in the BMW versus VWAG pissing match (which is infinitely more good-natured and entertaining than the GM-Toyota pissing match), it's going to make BMW sweat.  A lot.  Hard to call yourself "the ultimate driving machine" when you're bringing an M3 to fight an R8 and a 911 GT3   ;D

They also make them uber complicated and expensive to repair so for the sake of the VW owners they should not share design.

I thought things get better for the big boys and stay the same for the little guy. Check a Gallardo, a good share of that car is made or designed by Audi. So no I don't see a Porsche designed H6 in a VW anytime soon, more like Boxsters (and something smaller) with turbo fours.

Keep simple base engines for those who just want a German-feeling Corolla competitor.  But don't you think there's some place for VW to say "the MkVII GTI makes the power of a Mazdaspeed3 but with 35% better fuel economy"?

Wouldn't that be the day?

But in all seriousness VW has been debating whether to make the next-gen Lupo subcompact (aka the "Up!" Concept) rear-engine RWD or front-engine FWD.  I'll betcha that a Porsche corporate boss would push the Lupo towards the former.

And then a Lupo GTI would be quite a fun little toy.
