I thought it's well known by now that the fuel efficiency is based on the driving style and conditions so mixed results are to be expected.
First hand experience: the wife drives now the Outlander to work on the same route I drove it for almost 2 years. She constantly gets better fuel economy than I used to get, by 1-1.5L/100km.
I still think that the Equinox rating is rather optimistic.
Which is the reason for standardized testing to come up with numbers that are comparable to each other.
Right, but people should not be surprised if they are off the "standard" ratings.
