407 transponder adhesives?
« on: April 30, 2009, 02:08:03 pm »
I need that (3M?) velcro like adhesive to secure our transponder that came out of one car that was recently sold and now to be placed on the window of the new one. I recall having this same issue several years ago and had to contact the 407 people to mail me a couple of strips. Is it available at an office supply store?

I use the large grey strips from Canadian Tire that will not turn slimey under the sunlight.  3M makes several different kinds - the normal kind that doesn't last long under the sun, a heavy duty outdoor kind, and another one meant for porous surfaces like brick.

No it isn't Velcro....just kind of Velcro like. It is clear, peels off sticky on one side, and the other side there are closely arranged plastic vertical 'thingys' that mesh together when the identical pieces are pushed together.

How many of you guys use the 407? I'm curious.

Personally I've driven on the 407 ONCE, in a friend's car. It depends on where you live I guess.

I use it twice, three times a month. G to Richmond Hill via 401 and 407 and back and also 401 to 403  sometimes.  Works well for me.   Empty, fast, good surface.

If I had to commute on it tho' I'd be asking my employer to let me expense the trips as it ain't cheap.

Industrial strength Velcro works well for the transponders. A small packet from Home Depot  is enough for many cars.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Show up at the 407 office, I believe they're open Saturday mornings, tell them you have a transponder and you need tape, they will give you some.

It's 3M Dual-Lock Reclosable Fastener

We have some at work.  I will ask where we got it.

That's what I did.  Why pay for something you can get for free?

That's what I did.  Why pay for something you can get for free?

From the 407ETR FAQs:

Q. How do I get additional transponder fasteners for my windshield? A. Call us at 1-888-407-0407 and we will be pleased to mail them to you at no charge. They are also available at our Customer Service Centre located at 6300 Steeles Avenue West (just west of Highway 27) in Woodbridge.

Weekdays
8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday
Closed

For me, it would be a phone call.  I certainly wouldn't drive all the way to Da 'Bridge for a few pieces of tape.

When I went a couple years back it wasn't restricted to just the Woodbridge location.  A phone call would be the route I would go now.

Thanks for all this info :)  I have some good stuff but it melts in the sun and falls off (after a while but still)  I'll have to head to Home Depot for the sunproof stuff.
