First Drive:
2010 Ford Shelby GT500 Coupe

2010 Ford Shelby GT500 Coupe"It's brash, it's brutally quick and it's everything car haters love to hate," says reviewer Peter Bleakney of the new 2010 Shelby GT500.  "... a joyous distraction from all the doom and gloom consuming this industry," he adds.

And bite it does. Steering is direct and well-weighted (sorry Challenger), turn-in is quick, and the car has loads of grip. Over smooth roads (and I emphasize smooth), this uber Mustang is very impressive, carving graceful arcs between bends in a controlled, neutral manner. Although no lightweight at 1783 kg, it’s about 100 kg lighter than the Challenger SRT-8, and feels it.

More proof that the 2010 Mustang is the surprise of the year.  It looked like a cosmetic facelift at first glance, but every review I've read has been gushing over its dramatically-improved handling and excellent steering--two things you certainly didn't associate with the 2005-2009 Mustang.

You know, I've heard people say about the new GT500, "540 horsepower? That's it?"  ;D

We'll see what kind of market is left for this car. I don't think it'll be the same one that had buyers literally lined up to pay $20,000 or more over MSRP for the previous version.

Awesome car though for those that can pay to play. Based on what I've seen on the 2010 Mustang GT, the new Shelby coupe should be killer.

Well, the people whining in the V8 Vantage thread should be happy.  Lots of comments that "It costs $200k, I expect more horsepower."  Obviously those posters should be looking at the Mustang and not an Aston Martin...  ::)

As to this car...  the power is very, very impressive.  And the looks are killer.  But in spite of that, it just doesn't do it for me.  For $50k, I would rather a luxury sports car like a 135i, or a rally-inspired supercar killer like the EVO...  the GT500 barely even registers.  And it's not that I don't enjoy muscle cars...  I adore the Challenger, but for some reason, the Mustang just doesn't do it for me.  :(

Of course, I'll wager that viewpoint could be turned around by a test drive, so perhaps all hope is not lost!  It certainly sounds like Ford has done a hell of a job with the 2010 Mustang...

Is anyone with me??  Anyone........Beuller..............Beuller...............??  :)

Oh yea....I'd be all over the GT500 if it were a bit more affordable....I REALLY like the fact that Ford has improved all of the things that were "wrong" with the previous version of the Stang

I know that some out there may find this hard to believe but appreciating a killer car like the Shelby and still being able to appreciate the ultimate driving experience that a BMW 3 series provides are NOT mutually exclusive.  I own an '07 328xi coupe as a daily driver but I have always been a Mustang fan.  Ford lost me a bit with the 05 - 09 Mustang, simply because of the styling.  They just missed it, as in "close but no cigar".  But with the 2010 version, I am back.  I am seriously considering buying one of the new GT500's.  They are awesome, if you keep in mind their intent.  It will never handle a corner like my 328 while still providing an unbelievably comfortable ride, but my 328 will never give me the thrill of hearing a 540hp, 5.4L, supercharged V8 rumble to life, let alone be able to match the kind of acceleration performance that the Shelby has.  They are two totally different automobiles with two totally different agendas, but that will not stop me from owning both and appreciating each for what it is.

If you are a car nut like me, you don't subscribe to the "us vs them" mentality, be that between manufactures, or in the import v. domestic camps.  Great cars are great cars........PERIOD!

Good post, Car Guy, I agree 100%.

For me, it looked even more impressive in the flesh...er, metal.  If you arrived in a GT500, no one will notice the 135i or EVO...it's very menacing.  The price may just keep the riff-raff out...like me.   ;D

Let me know how you make out with the test drive Demo...I struck out.

I am not really a mustang guy.... Or so I thought.  The 2010 stang is just awesome and the GT500 is beyond awesome words can't describe how awesome it is.  I drove one one the track briefly and was in awe, what a great deal too.

I think this is a great car!

I also agree on the import vs domestic thing and all that jazz.  When I test drove a Mustang a while back I told the guy I was cross shopping that and a 3 series.  Not a problem for me.

Bob, if only more people around here were like you, this place would be a whole lot more fun.
