How much on CC?
« on: April 13, 2009, 03:43:44 pm »
New car should arrive at the dealer before the end of April. I would like to put as much as I can on a CC...for those valuable points  :light:. Will a dealer take CC for (a large) part of the total payment? Does it depend on the dealer?

I am guessing around $2000 for a new car, maybe more on a truck or suv.

I was able to put $3000 on a used vehicle last year, price was under $18,000.

Depends on the dealer and if you're willing to pay some or all of his credit card charges. I know a guy who used to put 1 ton diesel trucks on his company CIBC aeroplan card for the points.

I figured that is the problem.

That is a different case because that was your deposit, no?

First and foremost after a sale is agreed to a dealer attempts to obtain the largest deposit possible.  In doing so paying 5% to a CC company is  a minor expense.

I suspect in your case the dealer will not take a CC payment.  What is his incentive?  The deal is already done is it not?

My sister put a new 1994 Saab Viggen on her CC.  Dealer for those TO ppl here was on Eglinton East, east of Laird in Leaside.  Dealer said no way.  She said so sorry I'm not buying then.  Dealer ate it, because they probably got her paying more than she should have initially.

In my case he was agreeable to not needing *any* deposit.

:iagree: Steve.

Looking back I probably had the chance to use that CC for making a large deposit on the car...instead of nothing? :-\

Our policy is to accept $5000 max on CC. I've seen a few people raise a stink about using their CC to pay for the entire purchase. We've absorbed it on some where we made enough money and we've walked some where we hadn't.

Yes. They only took $2000 for the deposit off the CC, even I did told them take as much as they could. When I came back to finish the paper work with a bank draft to pay for the rest, the total on the cheque was $1000 short. Made that up with the CC.

Tougher to put $$ on CC after deal is done, but doable as long as the number is not too high.

I put $2k down when signing and another $2K (CC) + 1K (debit) when I picked up the car. The deal was written as $5k down at signing.

Total = $4K on CC

Which is fine as long as the CC is paid every month.    I hate the idea of paying 18-19% on 4K even if it is  just for 3 months or so.

Yes tpl. I was hoping to use CC to get 'points' not to delay payment.

I had sort of worked that out 21.   Pity that car dealers don't give Airmiles as well.  But I am sure that lots of people do delay the payment.

Interesting.

For sure that would factor greatly into one's car buying decision. Points on $40k could be substantial  :o.
