Yo Barrie!! TH2004R vs. TH350/TH400
« on: April 07, 2009, 01:10:57 am »
Barrie,

A popular Supra mod is to install a TH350/TH400 auto tranny to support 700+ RWHP since the stock Supra tranny will eventually fail at 600+HP or so.  I'm at the level now.  But I don't want the TH350/TH400 since they have no overdrive.  So I'm considering a TH2004R for when my tranny goes south.

Dimensionally, are these trannies close in size?  I would assume if I can fit in a TH400...then a TH2004R would fit.  Also, I would likely be running an Art Carr built tranny.  My only issue is since many of these are built for V8 duty...would they be able to handle the high RPM hit of the Supra? We're talking 8,000-9000RPM here...an RPM range most big blocks will never see......

Since you are the resident GM tranny expert...what do you think??
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

I suspect it would fit and do alright if you build it stronge enough. The 4spd trannies are not as strong as the TH400's but can be beefed up quite a bit. We can rotate them in the V8's easily as they are the same basic bolt pattern. I would go with either a Transco stage 2 shift kit or a B&M shift kit as both are very good. The stage 3 would be too much for the street driving.  I used the Transco last time myself for the truck and haven't blown it yet. Definitely changes the gear pattern and should help the Supra out quite at bit I would think. What stall are you considering useing with this box? Myself I use the B&M 2600 but you may wish to go even higher with yours. I have not used any of the Art Carr brand at all so I really can't comment on them. If he is building them for this application I would assume they would be good. What does TCI have that might also fit? They are very comparable I would think but I suspect you will need a adapter plate for the bolt patterns to hookup correctly. Probably the same tranny guy would have a lead on one of them.   :)
