Start of Tranny Troubles?
« on: March 30, 2009, 05:28:12 pm »
Hi: My buddy today went to his mechanic who drained the tranny fluid in the car is a V-6 Accord '05 with 115,000km's on it and told my friend the fluid was black(fluid was just changed about 13,000 km's) in fact showed us the drain plug which was totally black and had a few metal filings on it!Is this the beginning of the tranny problems? By the way my friend has changed the fluid every 40,000km's he has owned the Accord since brand new! Thanks for any help.

Honda Z1 fluid is known to discolour with frightening darkness.  It shouldn't be completely black; usually it's more the colour of a hot chocolate.  I can never tell the state of a transmission using colour or smell for that fluid (always seems to smell burnt ??? ).

A magnetic drain plug will turn completely black, but I'm not sure about the metal filings.  How big were they?

Is the Honda fluid a synthetic?  If not..I'd try a synthetic...it that turns black then you know you have issues...LOL...

The filings were not to big. The problem is he has to make a decision about the car Tuesday as the incentives on the Pontiac G-8 are likely to change soon and he has a coupon from GM($1,000)the coupon is on top of the current incentives it expires March 31st, nothing like crunch time he is leaning heavily towards the Pontiac as the Honda tranny is very problematic maybe not now but in the future! Thanks again for any help!!!

I have same: model, year and mileage. changed fluid myself @60k fluid was not that dark as far as I can remember, although the plug was black with iron filings, no problems otherwise. I sure Honda solved the common tranny problem by 04'. Could be just a bad one, when in doubt, wip it out

Exactly! Now, could you explain that to my parole officer? ;D
