Motorbike Rental
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:49:34 am »
My dad might come over to Canada this year, and if so he wants to rent a bike to do some touring.  So firstly can anyone recommend anywhere where you can rent bikes from?  He normally rides a sport bike but might go for a harley type for this trip.

Also best case scenario he would like to rent one in Canada and maybe drop it off in the US, are there any firms that do this?

If not are there any firms that allow pick up and drop off at a different point in Canada?

Your help is appreciated.

what about these guys?
http://www.rental-motorcycle.com/

seems one-way rental is possible and they claim they have many locations in Canada and US.
..
other ones I find thru google seem fairly localized.

anyway, hope your dad makes it here alright.

........Twist that wrist senor BOB.........New England (closer bye) has some fine backcounrty touring............and the Blue Mts more twisties......don't know that it will be that easy fer a FURRINER.....to get insurance and cross border drop offs too easily...and is he aware of the DISTANCES involved ov'r ere.............a days run is from M'chester to Inverness...... ;)........ a sports bike on those distances would require a sidecar with chiropractor....................Nothern Ontario and Southern Quebec may be more DO_ABLE........

Please, let's refrain from calling them "motorbikes".  That's what the early evening newscast people call them. :o

Motorcycles :)

Thank you

Motorcycle rental will be no less than $1500 per week taxes and insurance in.  Deposit no less than $2500.  and any little ding on the tank kiss that deposit goodbye.

Pickup in downtown Toronto and then first drive on a unfamiliar bike out of Toronto will be real treat.  :P

Instead buy one and then resell it.

I'm thinking that you will need to buy it, put it in your own name and insure it.  Your choice if you want to reveal to the insurance company, specifically, if your father will be trying it out.  ;)  It may not matter because he is a senior adult v. someone under 30.

Unknown is the cost of insurance for you.  Generally, for a 1100cc Goldwing just liability and the mandatory health benefits would be $500 per year.  You would need to confirm with your insurer if you could cancel the policy upon reselling or would you be getting stuck with a full year.

Well it was a good idea artic until you started down the insurance fraud bit, sorry but that's just not me. I think rental is the safer (and slightly more honest) option.

Well it was a good idea artic until you started down the insurance fraud bit,

You have a poor understanding of law.  It's not fraud and it's not illegal.  In the worst case scenario, that involving a teenage driver, it would be a breach of contract.  It's no different then letting someone else drive your car providing they have the legal right to drive and are of the same age risk.  I swap bikes with many ppl over 30 years of age and it's perfectly within my insurance contract to do that without notifying each time.

Suit yourself, but renting has so many restrictions and hassles it would take the leisure out of it.  I looked at that Toronto rental place and with mileage penalty it's about 2K per week.  That would be 8K for the month plus 3K in deposit.  That's whack.  Personally I'd lay out the short term cash and have a bike waiting so he could go where he wants and dump it anywhere if need be.

As I mention you can notify them that your dad will be an occasional with an international motorcycle driver's license if you like all your I's doted.  :)  It won't make any difference to them.  The biggest issue is getting any money back on a policy cancellation.  In the good ole days one used to get a policy, ride for 4 months and then cancel the policy.  Now they want the full year.

Have to agree this is the cheapest option.  You'd end up paying the same with a rental and  you don't get to keep the bike.

Most bike insurance in Ontario is seasonally weighted so that almost all the premium is for the summer months, if you cancel in the fall you get back squat.  YMMV

Get this, drive it all year and then sell it for about the same price http://kitchener.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-BMW-K1100RS-1993-Fully-Equipped-Sport-Tour-W0QQAdIdZ113806733

OK maybe to the letter of the law you are right, but telling an insurance company one thing with the intention of doing another just isn't on my moral compass.  In the UK where you could get your dad to be the main driver of a car and you (as a risky teenager) are named as the occassional driver, if you have a crash and the insurance company suspects that you are the main driver then you are prosecuted for insurance fraud, plain and simple.

Again you could drive a friends car based on your own insurance, but not for weeks on end.

So you can see why I wouldn't want to take the risk, being in a new country with already high rates of insurance.

Also how can I buy a bike and get insurance when I don't even have a bike licence?
