Who's going to be the first...
« on: March 25, 2009, 10:57:17 pm »
Who's going to be the first to switch their winter tires for summers this year?  I'm planning to give it until just before Easter.

Anyone already done it this year?

I booked an appointment for the CX-7 at the dealership for this Saturday to swap out the tires and an oil change. With a fresh snow fall of 20 cm last weekend, and freshly pack ice/snow in the residential street, will delay 2 more weeks, ... if no more snow fall.

The ix was almost stuck a couple of time this Monday, had to rock the car out. Large amount of fresh snow is nasty.

Picked up my new tires for the SRX at the UPS depot in Maine last Monday. I'll probably get both cars done sometime next week.

Car is being serviced Tuesday so after that I'll go across to the tire place and have them changed. It is supposed to be mixed snow/rain here Tuesday but the "summers" are the OEM all-seasons so I guess I'll get home ok.

Squishy has a good rule of thumb that he posted over in the Weather Thread in Off-Topic Discussions:
http://www.canadiandriver.com/forum/index.php/topic,49320.msg568539.html#msg568539

When the 14-day weather forecast shows consistent daytime highs over 7 degrees he switches over then.

Simple and makes sense.  I've always used the arbitrary date of March 27 each year.  His idea makes more sense.

I had the day off yesterday (my sick daughter was napping so I took that opportunity to get otuside for some fresh air).  Changed over my tires, inspected the brakes and suspension, and feel that i should be fine considering the precip we're expected to get going forward is rain, not snow. :)

I've done something similar to Squishy.  I also look at the long range forecast, look for consistent daytime lows of at least 5°, no snow in the forecast, and no nightime lows lower than about -5°.

For here, that usually translates to around the middle of April.

Middle of April... or later for me.

Last year I had it done during what I perceived it to be spring(late march or so) and it snowed again later that week...   I almost got into 2 accidents.

I'm not switching it to my shi+ty all season unless the road completely clears.

I came back from a trip to BC in that storm.  I had debated switching out to the summers in time for that road trip, but decided not to, as when we left in late March early April, I figured snow storms through the mountains were still a big enough risk for the drive there.  Didn't figure I'd need them for the drive back, but very thankful I left them on.  Hit the traction limit on my winter tires at only about 50 km/h in some stretches (though even slower when the snow was blinding at night on top of the snow being so deep, I couldn't tell the road from the ditch).  I can't imagine how bad the crappy OEM all-seasons would have been.

I'll just leave mine on, same as the last 8 years. I'll see how the new Nordics handle/wear this summer.

Yeah, we usually get some April Fools snow around here (Ottawa) too.  I'm just so anxious to get the summers back on though.

I did it myself on Monday. 30 minutes work and I can tell the difference immediately. Steering seems more responsive and handling is tighter.
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.
