CUV Roof Strength Ratings from IIHS
« on: March 24, 2009, 11:46:11 pm »
Not sure if CUV's should be here or in the Truck/SUV category, Ms. B feel free to move if you think it should   :D

Surprise here is the CR-V rating so low:

I'm surprised at the CR-V as well.  The Forester benefits from the low CG that the boxer gives, but the others...?
No place I'd rather be...

It's a roof crush rating. It's all about structure strength.

It's funny the CR-V is so low but the Element is top 4.

Sir is right. This is a roof strength rating not a "resistance to rollover" rating as the thread title might suggest to some. I looked around the IIHS site but I don't see any rollover tests. I believe CR includes a rollover rating  in their testing.

That aside, it is surprising that Honda ranks so poorly.

What about other vehicles that are not listed? I'm puzzled that this is only a partial list of vehicles. For example, Jeep Compass and Liberty are both missing. I would think they should be included here.

Hey, the Escape was an SUV when I bought it!  Shenanigans!

I'll remember to duck my head down when I roll it over.

Sorry, its fixed now.

I thinks, from what I can read, that is all they have tested. Or at least reported so far.

If you want a "resistance to rollover" test, you can find that at the NHTSA website, http://www.safercar.gov/ .  Rollover resistance is ranked with one to five stars.

Why is it so surprising that the Honda doesn't do so well?  My first car, a 1999 Civic coupe, got a two-star side crash test rating from the NHTSA.  When I think of Honda, I think of reliability and fuel efficiency first, not class-leading safety.  In my mind, the safety leaders are VW and Subaru.

TBH, I never thought of checking out the roof strength of our 2007 Santa Fe before we bought it but it sounds like there were no such comparitive tests 1.5 years ago anyway.  I see on safercar.gov that it is rated very highly for rollover, frontal and side impact, etc., but what if it were to rollover?  It would be very nice to know that the vehicle could protect us.  Does anyone know of a site other than NHTSA's which rates roof strength?  Maybe a european site?

It's surprising because Honda seems to be the company that markets the safety aspect the most... Remember all of those ads with crash dummies that press the brakes... those are all Honda ads.

If a CUV is rolled over, chances are, the vehicle will be a total loss, regardless of the star ratings. If high speed and and other vehicles are involved, the G/A/M ratings won't play a big factor.

I think the point of the roof strength ratings is to see if your head will be crushed by the roof in a roll over, or not.

Like someone else said, it looks like I'd have to remember to duck my head if I were to ever roll-over in my Sportage!
