My new Forester(s)
« on: March 24, 2009, 11:04:46 am »
Hi All!  This looks like as good a place as any to introduce myself and show off my new ride, and post my first post!

I've seen some people mention doing solo 2 with MCO in the mid 90's.  I was there too.  My first year was the last year it was held at Carleton U.  I had a red Miata with a roll bar.  I was usually with 2 other Miata's with the same roll bar, another red one and a white one.  Blur911, I thought the picture of your car looked familiar!  These day I'm getting my kicks on 2 wheels, a '95 Ninja 500.

Anyway, last October we picked up an '09 Forester.  Dark grey metallic, 5 speed, touring package.  Not much in the way of extra's, just the rear gate spoiler and the tweeter kit, and got the dealer to throw in the cargo cover.  We're lovin' it!

That was actually '09 Forester #2.  Somewhere between payment #1 and payment #2, the life of  '09 Forester  #1 came to an abrupt end on I95 just outside Portland, Maine.  A woman going the other way in the n/b lanes wasn't watching and didn't see traffic slowing down in front of her.  'Cause, you know, nobody has EVER seen sombody change a tire before!   ::)  She went into the grass median to avoid rear ending the car now stopped in front of her.  When she hit the grass she panicked, hit the gas instead of the brake, launched herslf up out of the grass in front of us  :o, bounced off the guardrail, came back and hit us almost head on, then she rolled after she hit us.  Just in front of my wife's feet took the brunt of the crash.  The airbags went off, and the Forester came to a straight stop.  We all got out without a mark on us, including our 4 year old.

It doesn't look that bad from the picture, but the Forester was a write-off.  They were up to $15k in damage before they even started to take it apart a bit.  The rr door didn't line up with the wheel well anymore, and there was a buckle in the roof near the lr corner of the sunroof.  So it took a real hard hit.  The crash was last August, the insurance aftermath that's still ongoing is worthy of the 'Moan 'n whine' board!

That's the story of my new Forester(s).  At least the 2nd one made it past payment #2!!!

Talk about flat spotting and welcome to the forum.

I think the Forester is one of the best looking CUVs on the market right now.

I guess that could make you rush out to buy a lottery ticket. Talk about lucky. Welcome to the Forum BTW.  ;D

Sad to see that brand new Forester in that state, but I'm glad you and your family are safe.

Great choice! If I was in the market for a CUV, it'd be between the Forester and Rogue.

Just to reaffirm your choice, the Forester is one of four CUVs that scored "Good" in the IIHS's recent roof strength test:

??? The mind boggles.

Glad to hear everyone is okay, and nice car (2nd one anyways, not so much the first :P)

Wow.  Interesting story.  Thank goodness your wife, your 4-year-old and yourself were protected so well in a modern, well-executed vehicle.  I like the Forester's (new) looks, too.  It has an honest, straightforward look about it.  Congratulations on a fine looking vehicle!

I agree completely. And manual transmission to boot  8).

I went into the Sub dealership the other day trying to convince myself that it could accommodate 3 teenage boys in the back. It could but only for trips less than 30 minutes  ::). We still need that extra row of seats.

Welcome to the forums!

Looks like the Forrester is one tough car...no wonder you went back and bought a second one.

Anyone that says "those old, big, steel bumpered cars are safer" is completely out of touch.  Modern cars are safer and better than ever.  The only reason I'd consider ditching our current 01 Forester is to upgrade in terms of safety.

Some years ago, just before the "safety rush" really hit all the manufacturers, I was speaking to a friend of mine that is a firefighter.  He attends many collisions and has special training in vehicle extrication.  He said "the only two makes I'd buy are Subaru and Mercedes.  If you spend the dough for a Euro brand, just go for the Benz, otherwise, Subaru is it."

Just a couple months ago, we had the same conversation.  He's now relented thanks to all makes making huge strides to catch the previous leaders.  He said "buy a car with side and curtain bags, and you're buying the best safety features to come along in decades, along with HSLA structures and better crumple zones.  It's getting hard to buy junk, thank goodness."
No place I'd rather be...

Glad to hear everybody is safe and congrats on the new Scoob! I wish the new Foresters were available when we got Becky because that is what Momzilla would be driving.

Absolutely right!  That's why I tell my kids that my 1989 CRX Si is an occasional use only car now.  Of course, garaging it every winter almost makes it one anyway but think about it:

Driver airbag:  NO
Passenger airbag:  NO
Side curtain airbags:  NO
Side airbags:  NO
ABS:  NO
ESC:  NO
Safety Cell construction:  Kinda maybe sorta
Front and rear crumple zones:  Probably

....makes me feel really safe!  Of course, nimble handling and an alert driver are worth a lot but still....

/Eric

Thanks!  After walking away from that, there was no question we were getting another Forester.  We were all ok 'til the Maine State Trooper at the scene told my wife that by all rights this should've been a multi person fatality.  When we finally made it to our hotel, much rum was consumed to calm the 'ol nerves.

Any other Forester owners want to see what your airbags look like?  Here ya go...

I hope I never have to see what my car's airbags look like... but it's good to know they're there. Hopefully--maybe I should check to make sure...? :-\
