After much research and deliberation and soul searching (it is an expensive purchase, especially in this economic climate) my wife and I bit the bullet and went to the Chevy dealership this afternoon and placed a factory order:

AWD Traverse with:

7 passenger seating, Trailering Package, Remote Starter and Rear Camera System

And after going to various dealerships to see *all* 10 available colours my wife had easily decided on "Gold Mist Metallic".

But by the time we got home there was an email waiting for us: "..all the equipment is no problem but your colour choice is built out for the year ..... unless we change the colour then we cannot order it..."

I am not sure how this works. Why would GM not be able to do a specific colour on a factory order? Customization is  the point of a factory order.  ???

My wife was disappointed. But to get the order in she chose her distant 2nd choice of Cyber Gray Metallic.

Order is now confirmed and have been told that it has a target build week of April 06th.

GM Employee Pricing less $5500 Cash Incentive less $1000 in lieu of Chevy's "Total Care".

Then less $1000 for our current vehicle on trade in...hope it keeps running till the new one arrives  :-[; and finally less $2000 GM Visa points.

I would walk away if wasn't the colour I wanted because what is the point of buying new if you can't have the colour you want. Plenty of GM dealers out there that want your business. I walk away right then and there.

Maybe they just add the extra bits after. Oh I don't know. But I do know I would walk away, no way would I sign if I couldn't get what I wanted.

It has nothing to do with the dealership at all as this was a factory order. I had checked with a couple of dealers in the past couple of weeks and there was no car already built with our options, including colour. (And between you and me her first choice in colour wasnt mine ;))

Let me get this right, it is a factory order. So they should make it they way you want. So I would order gold one and wait I would not settle for anything less. If this has nothing to do with the dealership as you say.

Edit:

TBH, after while, it's not the colour that you love, it is more the SUV. The colour becomes such non issue at least for me, after the first 6 months. I bet when your misses see the SUV for the first time. She won't care for the colour after the first hour.

This can happen with any ordered vehicle and is no big deal. Certain commodities become unavailable or options are changed. It's a GM factory issue in this case. Changing dealers won't make any difference.

Doing a factory order doesn't mean you get whatever you want. It means you can select from what is available. If a color is not available, it's not available.

I recall seeing this happen when a colour is being replaced by another one but given it is very near the end of the 2009 model year...only a couple of weeks away from not accepting anymore FO for a 2009 it cant be a colour change.

Oh who knows why it might not be available. Maybe they ran out of paint and aren't using the same colour for 2010? Maybe it was so popular they ran out of paint before the model year ended? Maybe it was so unpopular they just pulled it off the line? Maybe the supplier quit making that colour? I'm sure somebody with closer knowledge of factory paint operations would know better.

The point is it isn't a plot by the dealer to keep you from getting what you want as Cortina implied.

I did realize this as I had indicated in my reply to Cortina that it wasn't a dealer issue but rather a factory issue.

I guess that is one way to get in your colour and not put strain on the marriage.  :D

I wasn't really Implying anything. I just said what I would do. Regardless. I'm very Stubborn. :)

Just out of interested why did you pick the traverse. :)

No problem Cortina. I always appreciate different points of view.

Why TRAVERSE?:

-To keep peace in the family we had to buy GM (Employee Purchase)
-We decided we still needed to have 3 rows of seats
-I would never buy the SV6/Uplander/
-I had been hearing/reading good things about the Lambda platform and the 09 DI engine, and the Traverse in particular:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/22/automobiles/autoreviews/22traverse.html

-I started to shy away from the Saturn Outlook because of GM's plans to ditch the division
-I couldnt afford the Enclave with AWD  :(
-I liked the look of the Traverse over the Acadia
-the Chevy dealer from whom we finally bought did a much better job re the quote ie *no* fees beyond govt taxes and delivery as compared to the GMC dealer with the Acadia

Huge discounts on the 09 Equi. as it is totally redesigned for 2010 and they should be in showrooms this summer.
