No, I used that phrase repeatedly in the second half of my post because I was responding to your statement: "The results seem to reflect, in some cases at least, sales numbers."  Only in a few cases do the highest-ranked cars happen to be the best-selling.

Hmm...  you mean, like this: "The results seem to reflect, in some cases at least, sales numbers."

Nowhere did I claim all or even most of the results were best-sellers.  So pointing out the cases where they aren't best-sellers is a fallacious argument - you're rebutting an argument I never made.  ::)

CR has faults but until a better solution comes along with the same dedication to testing and research they are the best IMO. Nobody else even comes close.

Oh, their dedication is not questioned.

No matter what result they want, they'll find a way to get it.  ;)

I think Base MSRP $ over lb-ft torque per tonne (curb weight)

So BMW 135i = $41,700 / (300/1.530) = 212 Bucks per bang (it's a new measure)

what can you raise me..?  ;) Can someone find the Camaro specs?

Camaro V6 =

G37 Sedan = $37,090 / (269/1.613) = 222

So:
G37 Sedan = $37,090 / (269/1.613) = $222 per bang
BMW 135i = $41,700 / (300/1.530) = $212 per bang
Genesis Coupe = $24,495 / (223/1.560) = $171 per bang
Camaro V6 is $26,995 / (273/1.700) = $168 per bang

;D That Camaro is looking hard to beat...

Come on people, fill up the list!
VW Passat Trendline TDI = 25775 / (236/1.465) = 160

Cobalt SS

25 445 / (260 / 1.34900) = $132 bucks per something. ???

Ooops, perhaps I have accidentally omitted a piece of info: CR only includes cars with at least above avg. reliability in the list.

It is a weird way to measure a new car, but it makes sense. I don't think it is a good idea to take the number as an absolute value. It's just for comparison purpose.  It basically means that taking all things into account, a Rabbit is a better value than an Impreza sport in your 5 yrs of ownership. That's all.

That's not wrong to say that an Avalon is a better value than a G37. Avalon is indeed a very good value in its category. The problem is that nobody wants to be seen driving one.

Now the Fusion looks like the best value in the market. With very good performance, excellent reliability and $9500 cash rebate, who can beat the value, at least on paper? However, it may cost you an arm and a leg when you trade it in in 5 years. That's the take home message CR often wants to emphasize. But, if you plan to keep it for 10 years, then better rush to a Ford dealership now. $23000 for a  V6 AWD Fusion is like a killer deal.

Resale value is a key criteria for me and so this methodology is appropiate
if you feel comfortable with road scores for comparable cars on your shopping list.
eg: 95 for G37 vs. 85 for a TL with results $465 vs. $505 even thou' five year costs higher
on G37.  This has merit.

Here is another take.  Honda has 10; Toyota 17 of top 71.  Honda's Insight finally a challenge
to the two Priuses on list.  Honda stock beat up due to high yen but IMO a great buy below $25
as of today on New York ADR list --HMC.
