Brake pads replacement.
« on: March 17, 2009, 08:40:14 pm »

Hi, I have a 2005 Chevrolet Epica, it has 50,000 km. When do I need to do the brake pads, will I have some sort of a warning noise? Do the rotors as well need replacing then? Any suggestions whom I can take my car to that will not rip me off to do this. I live in Scarborough. Thanks

Things that mean your brakes need service is

-Squealing noises
-Pulling to one side while breaking
-Vibration
-Have to press the peddle almost to the floor
-Breaks Grabbing with slightest touch.

Having said that all my GM brakes have been really good.

Just have them checked when you do your tire rotations.  There is no set mileage.

It will depend on just how long you leave it when they are getting down as the more wear the more chance of having to replace more parts besides the Pads or shoes. Usual rule of thumb is 2 sets of fronts to one set of rears but not always of course. As long as you buy good quality parts you will be OK as well. If you intend to keep the vehicle a long time then never put any White Box parts on the car at all as they are garbage that the carlots use to sell used cars or trucks.     :)

Pads and rotors should be replaced when they have reached their minimum thickness.  That number is stamped on the parts or documented in the service manual.

Brake linings have held up fairly well on the EPICA, however on cars with rear disk brakes, the rear pads typically don't last real long. Probably a good idea to have them checked given the current mileage on the original set. As was mentioned, have them checked when you have your tires rotated most places that sell tires offer free tire rotations, but may charge to check brakes. You bring the car in for a rotation they shouldn't charge you to check the brakes at the same time.

As mentioned, have them checked more often if you have rear discs.  The old guideline of two fronts to one set of rears only holds true for drum brakes.  Rear discs are a crap shoot but usually last about 75-50% the life of a set of front pads.

Once you get down to the wear indicator you might have some rotor damage already, especially with newer cars and their good sound insulation where it might take you a while to notice the squealing.  I check brakes every oil change, where I also do a tire rotation while the oil is draining.

..it's also quite easy to look thru some rims (mags) and see the brake disks...also to run a finger across them (when cool) to feel for any grooves, scratches or Rust (from pads not touching the disk evenly)  and leaving unswept areas.................

Good point about letting the brakes cool before touching them.  They can be burning hot from experience.  :(

Good Lord! That post was completely intelligible and coherent. Has the world gone topsy-turvy?

It's not his first coherent post, for the record when he speaks clearly you should listen to him, for he knows what he speaks.

LOL!

Anyway I've experienced having the wear indicators carving a clean 3mm wide groove into the disc.  It was a bit horrifying to look at.

I was only able to hear it with the windows open driving slowly beside a building so the sound could reflect in.  With maybe 45k mileage I wasn't expecting the rears to be gone.  Now I know!
