Essentially, that's what Nokian did - took an h-rated winter tire and branded it as "all-weather."

Exactly. Nothing wrong with running a winter tire all year round, as long as you pick one that has good summer season performance, which CR rates. As noted, some can perform better than all seasons:

The most interesting result was that the snow tire performed better on wet asphalt than did the all-season tire. The snow tire stopped sooner -- 150 feet versus 155 -- and pulled more g -- 0.71 versus 0.69. And its 56.60-second run through the wet autocross course was 0.11 second quicker.

The major drawback noted in this test was that if you corner like a madman the tire will wear out quickly. Basically you have the soft rubber of a summer performance tire but additional tread height, sipes, etc.

I had a good experience with a set of Toyo Proxy 4's on my old Integra. While I didn't use them year round, I typically had them on well past the 1st snowfall so they would probably be suitable for the limited winter use scenario you described. They were a big step up from the stock rubber but I remember they were kinda pricey.

I certainly would advise you to stay away from the Michelin Energy MXV4 that came stock on the Integra and many other Honda/Acura cars. I tried using them for one winter and they were treacherous.

Sorry for the horrible spelling in my original post.

Hey buddy, all I did was bring valid points and concerns here... It's the other guy there that jumped on me, blame him!  ;)

Back on topic, I think it's GREAT that Quebec now mandates winter tires during winter months... it takes away the thinking part from people like you and forces you into making the right thing! I can only hope that Ontario does the exact same thing.

And my valid points and concerns were that he shouldn't be cheap when it's a matter of his wife and kids' safety. If that's not a valid point, I don't know what is!

Holy hell, I push winter tires harder than anyone (or so I thought!) but this seems a bit too much.  For a car that sees less than 10,000 km a year, you'll never wear down two sets of tires before they expire.  My recommendation is a top-of-the-line all-season, in terms of winter performance, not price.  I don't know if there are any more all-weather tires like the Nokian WR for passenger cars; I know there are quite a few for passenger-rated light truck tires.  Those would be my first choice, followed by an H-rated winter tire.

I would never run a Motomaster SE in the winter.  In my opinion, that's one tire where the all-season label is misapplied and why tires like the Nokian are now called "all-weather".  It seems as if any tire that meets M+S gets called an "all-season".  I couldn't even find a normal, non-performance summer tire labelled as such the last time I shopped for tires.

Well I have been thinking about it and I MIGHT (big maybe) be able to find one replacement winter tire to replace the worn one before next winter.  In the meantime I will still need an all-season or summer set of tires for her car.  My choices will be dependant on what I find in terms of a replacement winter tire:

If I find a replacement winter, I'll be looking for a more summer-oriented tire like the Kumho KU25 (ASX) or such.
If I don't find a replacement winter tire, I'll be looking for a year-round tire that won't need to drive in severe winter conditions really at all, just the typical slush/salt brine that is prevalent in Ottawa.

I've ran Motomaster SE 155/85R13 in Toronto winter.   They seemed ok in slush and snow but slippery on wet ice.  Winter performance really degraded when they got older and worn.  I don't recommend spirited winter driving with them; cautious defensive would be better.  :)

I had Kuhmo ASX (215/5017) on my Maxima. I won't be buying them again. They were reasonably quiet, decent grip but I am not that hard on tires and they were DONE after 14 months of driving (I use snows in the winter). I don't expect Sporty tires to last forever but based on their wear rating 420 I expected much more.

If you stick with winters and are looking for mpore summer oriented CT has the General Exclaim UHP on sale this week in your size 205.50/16 for $110 each. Its a substantial savings over all the canadian online sites and so far has been less expensive than all but the crap low end (Achiles Hurcules etc) tires I was quoted. Its been tested and rated OK by tire rack. Supposed to have good wet performance . I wouldn't put them anywhere NEAR snow though.

I'm probaly going to go with these.

My bad, I meant the Kumho AST.  They are similar to the ASX though I believe.  Hard to think they'd be done THAT fast though... wow... only basically two summers' worth?

I have the General UHP's on my TSX and love them, but didn't realize CT was having a sale on them right now.  I think that might be the best bet, and then get one or two new/used winter tires to replace the flat-spotted one that started this entire thread in the first place. :)
