Thanks to all who replied, either by voting or commenting.  If you haven't yet voted, I would ask that you cast your vote for a more accurate picture.  I will keep the voting unlocked for another few days.

Based on the replies here, I did some digging and found out a few tidbits about transit use around the world as well as here in Canada.  While I could not find an outright ranking such as hinted at in this thread (link anyone?), I did find that some useful metrics have been developed, allowing for some kind of ranking to take place.  Some are quite complex and involved, while one focuses on the pollution angle almost exclusively.  Another looks at transportation from an age/employment point of view.
