Awesome looking bike.  I'm wondering whether to get a bike in a few years...

I want to learn how to ride a bike, to the extent that I'll eventually be proficient enough to track it.   I see the motoGP guys hanging out the rear during braking, balancing the bike through the corner, and easing in the throttle on exit.  Then there's this weight shifting and counter-steering business.  That's so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!   It's so visceral!!!!!

What's the least riskiest way to approach that...?

And by "risk" I mean "hurting myself".  ;)

^^Least risky?  EASILY super motard.  Nothing else comes close.  The bikes can take a beating and multiple crashes with little worry or minimal damage.  To get around quick on a motard bike, you really should slide the back.  This is not only loads of fun...but teaches throttle, brake and weight transfer control.

I have never felt more like a bike racing hero than when I raced motards on an open track day...and passed the fastest sportbikes on the market on the OUTSIDE of corners!  Of course they disappeared into the blue yonder as soon as they got on the straights.  But motards are all about the corners and control....

Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki are each making very nice 250cc motards.  The Yamaha is VERY nice with fuel injection, titanium valves, light weight etc...VERY nice package..and 80 MPG to boot!

That's part of the point.  When you drop and trash them, you just scrape the pegs and the bar ends.  No $$$$ body work gets toasted.  Also...they are SUPER light.  And the lean angles are absurd.  We race ours on the lake ice in the winters...

WTF happened with the front headlights!  Oh wait, I forgot, it's a modern Beemer, it needs asymmetrical headlights:

I remember when BMW had the same bold claims for the "Hayabusa beating" K1300S  series a couple of years back.  And we all know how THAT turned out...Guess we'll have to wait for a real head to head test to see...

I'm wagering it'll be in the same ballpark as the established class leaders, but not dethroning anybody for a generation or so.  BMW's got a lot of experience racing cars, and racing motorcycles in the desert, but when it comes to supersport machines, the Japanese four and Ducati have a whole lot of recent real-world experience that BMW just isn't bringing to the table yet.

Thanks for the links. I am cured of car fever.

Looks great, though I am not a great fan of the colour choices. The yellowish-goldish colour looks like carry over from E46 M3.

Yup.  The problem for BMW as well is that (like Toyota did with the Supra...) the 'Busa has so much power and capability not on the table.  Suzuki can open the tap on it anytime it looks like someone other than Kawasaki mounts a real threat.  I'm a big Honda fan, but no one can build bike engines like Suzuki.  The big ZX is right there performance wise, looking at numbers, but riding it, it lacks the "freight train with a nuclear powerplant" feel of the 1300 Suzuki.

As for BMW's S1000RR, we'll have to see how the litre class responds.  The gixxer puts out ~180hp now, so it's not like BMW has arrived with an insurmountable lead.  I haven't owned a GSX1000 and don't know that much about the mill, so I don't know if it's as far from it's potential as the 1300 Suzuki plant.  All other Suzuki engines (way back to the original 1000cc Katana from the 80's) I've been into have a lot of power to be easily found, so I suspect the current 1000 is no different.

BMW should learn from the past and keep their trap shut before results.
No place I'd rather be...
