What part(s) of the test is it failing (NOx, CO)?

Could be many, many things. First, how many KM? Over 200,000, don't waste your time, it is not worth it in most cases.

But......if there is no "check engine" light I would replace the catcon. OTOH if it is a 350, they are notorious for poor OEM valve seals which let oil in the combustion chambers and lead to high HC and CO levels. If the vehicle is using more oil than it should, like a litre every 2000 km or more (and it should burn none, these are tight engines) you are probably looking at valve seadl or a new engine. You would have to ask yourself if this is worth it for a 16 year old vehicle? My answer would be "no" since a proper engine replacement is at least $3000.

To replace the valve seals is not all that expensive a job on these engines as the parts are less then $80.00 for the whole set. The labour is the biggest part but it dosen't take all that long to do them. The engine will smoke on startup until its warmed up if this is the case.  :)

Yup, but it is an easy job on a small block. I have seen cases so bad they smoked all the time. Other than that one small thing, a 350 is practically indestructible.

Do we need TWO threads on this?    It is in the Technical questions section as well.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
