1989 Toyota Hilux SURF (ie 4Runner)
« on: February 16, 2009, 11:14:29 am »
My new ride for a while - 1989 Toyota Hilux SURF. Rhd. Its a bit of a mongrel as it started life out with a turbo diesel 2.4L engine which was swapped out for a 22R-E (recently rebuilt). Its got 5spd gearbox and right hand drive of course. Japanese writing all over the place in it too.

first outing

Very cool. I see lots of JDM cars around here... How are you finding the RHD?

Love the action photos, looks like fun.

Too bad the diesels gone, but the 22R-E is a good mill.  Love the skulls...

Congrats Arthur!

I had an 86 Toyota 1 tonne with the 22R-E. Motor lasted fine, but make sure the coolant is changed regularly, the head gaskets are prone to rotting away between the 2-3 cylinder. Other than that lasted pretty well.

Wow, that's a rare one.  I'm not familiar with the Hilux.  Is it significantly different than the 4Runner of that era?

Its my fourth vehicle - Hilux, 62 Beetle, Seven and Nissan Quest  :rofl2:

The Bug has no seat belts and still has electrical issues and we needed a second vehicle to get the kids to their various activities and this was cheap. The Seven hasn't gone anywhere - I haven't even visited it for months but I plan to take some time off work to finish off when it warms up a bit. I've been very neglectful.  :-[

The right hand drive is not a big deal. I did catch myself trying to put it into 5th instead of 1st once and once and a while I'll do the wipers instead of turn signals but no big deal. Visibility isn't bad at all - being in a long slung sports car might be a whole different ball game though.

The diesel engine had the head crack and over heated from what I remember (very common issue actually). I think the turbo wasn't spooling up well either. Its now got turbo and V6 decals without having either :)

The skull shifter makes for cool hands in the winter and I had fun trying to switch between 2wd, 4wd and 4low. I found a shift diagram and it makes sense now.

Good thing the accel/brake/clutch aren't switched around too, eh?  That would require some serious thought for some time...

Looks good! The roads are probably all bare in Lethbridge by now though. In the Hat we still have plenty of ice to slide around on, and I've wished for a 4WD lever a couple times already.

Nope - I don't read Japanese.

The roads just got a fresh dusting of snow. With the mud tires its not the greatest in the snow though.
