Family car
« on: February 13, 2009, 09:51:00 pm »
I think my first post was done wrong. I should have more choices than the Civ or Rolla.

First off my 90 Olds Ciera is done as it cost me almost $800 to get it to pass Aircare, $1700 to insure it and another $1700 to get some reapirs done.
So now I'm looking for a car where I can seat 2 adults and one 17 mth kid and maybe another.
Safety and reliability are a must, fuel efiiciently and bang for buck are also right up there.

I have thought about the Civ, Rolla and the Mazda 3 Sport.
Did I miss other makes?

Some Mazda dealers are advertising $6k off a 2008 Mazda5 - that's perfect for a small family.

Pricing on 5's is insane if you can find an 08.  Friends of mine got a loaded one for $18K...
No place I'd rather be...

From what I've read and heard the Mazda 5 lacks reserve power when loaded.
I often think minivans and SUV are over rated as myself,my two sisters and parents survived without either.
And that's with two working parents.
Maybe it was because the Mortage Rate was in the double digits.

Add to the list that I'm hoping for something $25k or under or IF neccessary $30k or under

Most 4 bangers lack reserve power when loaded.

Mazda 5 is a lot smaller than the current crop of  "mini"-vans, imho its like a taller Mazda 3 hatch.

Current Gen Mazda 3 also is in clearout mode....
Everything in life is relative.

$25K-$30K will get you a used '09 AWD Ford Flex with less than 20k kms. Perfect family vehicle. Maybe it's larger than you were thinking of?

What size family car are you interested in?  Same size as your Ciero?  Going bigger or smaller?   Do you plan to have another baby?   How much space do you need?

The Ciera was probably the last really good car GM made, the things were loathed by the automotive press and loved by customers but when GM killed it, Oldsmobile was killed along with it. Also remember that we don't get much in the way of corrosion in these parts.

The Flex is too large for Vancouver traffic and parking. You'd spend the farm buying gas for it even if you could find a place to park it.

The Mazda 3, Corolla, Civic, and the others mentioned are all good cars. If one wanted a small van, the Mazda 5 would be fine for Vancouver where big passing power really isn't needed. We don't have superhighways, thank God.

Don't be too down on SUV/CUVs. For example, the 2009 Escape/Tribute* has more power, is shorter nose-to-tail than a Corolla, Civic, Mazda 3 and 5 without sacrificing passenger space. Doing the build+price on mazda.ca you can get into a new Tribute automatic for ~$28800 all (BC) in @ 0% without even negotiating.

18yrs and over 212,000km on it.
I probably bad mouth Mini-van,SUVs/CUVs because I've seen too many people having a hard time driving them or maybe I've lived a shelter life where we didn't need those kind of vehicles :P
No Flex is looks ugly.I wouldn't mind getting something in the same size as the Ciera and we are looking to add another little one but I have to be realistic about the size. And price I have to factor as I'm the only one paying for it.

There was a provincial program accepting cars 95 or older but I was denied because I didn't insure mine for 12 continuous months. As much as I like to donate the car I want to get as much money back as possible. I just wish I can at least get the $95 it cost me to get anchor installed for the car seat.

The Fusion is the most reliable mid-size car you can get. Good used deals too.
