Day 1:

2009 Jeep Compass Limited
After nearly two months, my life is getting back to normal -- all in one fell swoop.  I haven't had a test vehicle in a good while and with the bus strike ending in Ottawa, I can get back into a more sane daily routine than the one I was forced into for the past few weeks.  So, I return to my daily blog with the 2009 Jeep Compass -- updated since I last drove this model back in, oddly enough, February 2007  More...

I should mention this vehicle comes with 18" aluminum alloys.  Chrysler mounted steelies and winters for us.

I had one as a rental for a week not too long after they came out. I didn't really want it, but any rental was in short supply. It actually worked ok. The looks even grew on me. Still not pretty though. Some of the driving conditions that week were very poor, but the Compass chugged through it fine. I even got used to the CVT. It seemed more quiet than the last Caliber I had.

I like the looks of the Patriot better than the Caliber or Compass. It reminds me of the old Cherokee.

I really like the styling of the Nitro. Looks like the old Landcruiser or Travelall, real trucks, not rolling suppositories.

To tell the truth, I really like the looks of most Chrysler products. They're all very distinctive, if controversial.

 Thumbs up

We looked over the Patriot and Nitro, both were available with manual transmissions (no longer true for Nitro) which was nice. The Nitro was a good size, but too hard on fuel, pretty trucky ride, but acceptable given the vehicle. The Patriot was only marginally larger than our Vibe, so not much point trading for only a small gain in practicality and worse fuel economy.

The manual transmission made a huge difference in noise and power delivery over the CVT. Not bad shift quality either. Really tough to beat pricing.

I might be the only person in the world to say this, but I really like the look of a vehicle with black steel rims like those. I'm not sure why. Maybe they make the vehicle look more rugged, I don't know.

Just to clarify, I don't like the look of the Compass itself (looks bloated and like a plastic toy), but I like it's wheels!  Grin

There is one side profile picture in the review that actually makes the Compass look sharp.  If it's still around, hopefully they can smooth out some of the lines.  I'm far more interested in this review/day-by-day because I've been looking at a Patriot for myself.  Any chance you can get a Patriot North w/5speed and 4x4 next ?

In Summary:

It's ugly, it does not go, or stop well, the interior is bland, and handling is o.k. for a heavy vehicle with a high centre of gravity.
