I am with The Personal as I get a group deal as a CGI retiree and just heard about this from an ex colleague. Called them and  its straight on the policy as of now.

Every little helps.

Does any other Ont Insurance Co do this? Anybody know?

Good call on their part...not sure...I'll give the co-operators a buzz.

I've heard nothing but bad about the personal if you ever claim.

We had 3 not at fault claims with the Personal about 10 years ago. All within 2 years and all on the same car.  The 3rd collision was a write off.  It was a 12 year old celebrity.  I think we got $1300 for it.  Or maybe it was for the giant magnet in it.  Our rates never went up.

the only one i heard bad things about was "Bel Air Direct" - which is a discount insurance company targeted at students and young people (IMO). ThePersonal is a group insurance company, offered to people who work for companies like CGI, BMO, etc. it can't be that bad!

I have a suspicion that The Personal and Desjardins are associated  somehow.

Nice touch but how do they really know if you have snow tires? Do they inspect your car with the tires on?

Sounds like an automatic thingy in that they trust you. But maybe they also require you to leave them on all year round! I'll bet that some people will ignore putting them on but claim the discount especially if there isn't any inspection.

I asked the csr that.  He said that they assume  people will be honest about that. I asked if their adjuster would take a look if there was a claim and he suggested that they could well do so.

I was quite willing to send him the receipts for the tires. had he wanted them.

We have Belair as our group plan at work, checked with them and their rates were not great.  As "The Personal" has stated that they will cancel insurance on any car used for legal CASC events I don't even bother checking with them.

everything about my auto insurance plan involves them "trusting me" as far as i can tell. since rates vary depending on how much you drive per year, I told them 6000km due to public transit. they asked for no proof. likewise they slightly varied rates depending on whether i parked on-street or in a parking garage and again, they asked for no proof.

Having proof will only matter if you try to make a claim. They're an insurance company. They don't care about your safety, they care about the likelihood of them paying out on a claim. Good luck with any of your coverage if the car is towed in with all-season tires after you told them it had winters.

My gripw about The Personal is with their home insurance. They will not insure houses with Aluminium wiring unless one gets an ESA inspection and certificate to say it is safe.  being anti knob and Tube I understand but any Aluminium wired house that hasn't burnt down by now probably wont.

That's pretty standard stuff nowadays.  Same goes for places that have 60 amp service.

They trust no one.  Like Cord days they nail you on the claims side.

The Underwriting side of a INS. CO. is the good cop.  The Claims side is the bad cop.

There is always that risk.  I wouldn't buy an aluminum wired home.  It is a real pain to have to rebuild after a fire.

I already knew about the aluminum wiring problems when I rewired my home 2 years ago as i only had 2 that were which we replaced. made sure my insurance Co knew at the time that I had updated all my hydro to a 200Ampt service with a Generator hookin Panel as well.  You will not be covered for useing a Gen unless you use the correct service panel for it to be used properly with in the event of a fire. Too many folks use the electric dryer inlet as the power source in which to supply the Gen power and endup hurting someone working on the line as it leaks out unless you throw the switch on your Panel to completely off. I believe the aluminum wiring has to be declared when selling a home in Ont as I would definitely offer less for the home in order to cover the cost of the new wiring.  :)
