Buying from Tire Rack
« on: January 14, 2009, 10:59:00 am »
Hi everyone, I am new to this site and am considering buying a new Toyota Venza with 20" tires. I know that these tires are not cheap, however at tire rack they are not to bad a price. My question is have any of you fellow Canadians ordered tires from tire rack and is the freight crazy expensive?

Easy enough to check on their site. Just choose tires, click of "shipping quote" and enter your postal code. ???

Yes, you can save lots of  money buying from tirerack, however UPS takes a good chunk of it to get the tires across the border.  You can save quite a bit by bringing them across yourself, however you want to do that.

It costs a lot to ship across the border but even factoring that in you're probably still saving quite a bit compared to buying them in Canada.

As I've said,it's best to crunch the numbers yourself. It's easy enough to do(online quote from TireRack vs CDN online sellers vs local shops). Just convert to CDN $,allow for installation, tax etc and make sure you're comparing "apples to apples"

If you're asking if Tirerack is honest, reliable, good to do business with etc etc the answer is yes. I've bought two sets from them in the last year and was happy both times.

The dollar might have gone down in relation to the US, but tire prices in Canada were quickly (in nanoseconds) adjusted.  It means the spread between TireRack and our local prices is pretty much intact.  I bought our WS-60 Blizzaks in Canada for $130 per tire in October and by December they were $160 each.

But, since tire prices went down so quick when our dollar went up, we can't feel bad, right...   ::)

I bought tire rack tires. I have a shipping depot right across the border in ND 1 hour away. I got them shipped there for cheap($60) I went & picked em up. The depot charged $10 for pick up. Payed pst & gst & brought em across. saved 60% vs what they wanted in canada.

Hey...I am also considering the 2009 Venza.  Taking it for a test drive this Saturday.  Will be trading in my 2005 4Runner if I do so.
What tires are you thinking about ordering and why? New car = new tires, unless I'm missing something.  R U getting snow tires?  Just curious...

I also have bought countless sets from Tirerack since Canadian tire companies gouge like mad.

If I was considering a Venza, I'd be looking to see if 16" or 17" wheels from another Toyota model (Highlander?) would fit...for winters that is...

Wow... two potential Venza owners.  Would love to hear your impressions once/if you get one.  I'm considering one in about a year or so too.

As I posted in another thread, I doubt you could go down to 16 inchers.  If the stock tire size for the V6 is 245/50/20, then going down "minus 2" would be 225/70/18.  I think you possibly could be able to get down to a minimum 17", but that's about it due to tire sizes.  But, I could be wrong.

Well, since the other tire size on a Venza is 19", I don't see a big issue going down to a 17"....

I've seen the 18" winter packages at Tirerack though.....235/65/18

I think it depends on what tires you buy. I looked at a couple less expensive High Performance All season 17s and after freight duty ,exchange and tax I did not find a notable savings over our freinds here at tire trends. It initally looks like a big savings like say 40-50 a tire but freight to NS eats up a lot of that , exchange and the unknown duty. If you can pick them up in the US its probaly a no brainer.

If they put big brakes on the Venza, you may be limited. If you can go 17", definitely do it, but if the brakes are too big then 18" will be reasonable.

The TRD Big Brake kit for the Celica, Corolla, and Matrix requires a minimum wheel size of 18".

Should have contributed to this thread earlier.

I bought my winters off Tire Rack because the local tire shops did not have the tires I wanted. (So basically bought them from the states because of the supply issue)
The cost is about the same. Cheaper tires in the states but with duty and  shipping they are about the same.

17" Blizzak WS-60s $140 US each.

When was that?  Everything now is about 25-30% more expensive when buying in the US.  BTW, shipping to Vancouver is about $50 if it comes from their Reno warehouse.  If it's from Indiana, it's almost double. I was thinking of buying some Blizzacks and steel rims or Firestore Winterforce. The Winterforce were a little less expensive than the Blizzaks because only Indiana had the Winterforces.  Now, I am looking at an all weather tire like the Nokian WRG2.  Tire Rack doesn't seel these unfortunately.

Just ordered  4 225/45R17  Yokohama AVID W4S  and 4 Enkie SC05 rims for the GTI. Saved $480 over the Canadian alternative even after all the shipping and duty exchange. I tried to go local I really did . I prefer to support local guys and get service. BUT the tires were HALF the price I could get here. The Wheels were nearly half the price.

I know its about volume but $500 is basically an entire set of tires. Gota look out for number one at some point.

I agree 100%.  I'll buy locally if it's within reason..say $100 or so.  But definitely not at twice the cost of what it would cost me locally.  My local "tire guy" is pissed at me because I buy across the border now, so to get back at me, he refuses to mount my tires.  So now he's missing out on my business on the service side of my purchase.  So now the US gets my $$ to mount and balance my tires....And oh yea...that's cheaper too.

You're kidding, right?  I just priced out a set of 19" tires.  On average, the cost PER TIRE was $135 CDN more to buy in Canada..and some ran up to almost $175 per tire.

Considering the comment was from Jan. 09 I think he's referencing the difference in the exchange rate.  If I recall the loonie was at about 70-75 cents around then.
