I didn't realize you could do this. What exactly is he doing with the clutch and or key for this work?

Nothing.  Key has to be on.....then when you roll, you just "pop" the clutch.  Release clutch quickly. The push clutch back down fast to give the engine a chance at firing...

Pretty easy after you do it a couple of times.  The Echo is so light and easy to do, not only can I start it this way, but I can also push it.  No need for a running start either.
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

However.    Firstly. You DO need enough battery for the computer and a spark.   No computer no spark no start.  Some cars will turn on so much ancillary equipment when the ignition is turned on that you won't get enough volts for the computer to run and work the ignition.
Secondly, You DO need to be quick with the clutch as the video comments show as most modern  manual cars won't start without  the clutch pedal being depressed. (Rant: Another deeply stupid idea by the safety nazis... probably brought on by the non-existent "Audi problem")

As you say RR, a light and simple car works best at this.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Your owner's manual may recommend against this.  It dumps a load of fuel into the catalytic converters before the engine fires up and could burn them out.

Read your car owner's manual before attempting.   Mine says do not do it.

Did this a few times with the Beretta after I got a dud battery from CrappyTire.

A standard is very easy to start this way but a auto tranny usually has to be towed to at least 40mph or so in order to do the same thing. I have done this over the years with the older models that had it and would leave them in nuetral until we hit enough speed to drop it into drive. A friend of mine had no starter in his old Volkswagon years ago for over 2 years and just pushed it everytime he wanted to go somewhere. It was a old beater at the time and he had no extra cash to put a newer one in. Never failed to start in the 2 years he did this.  :)

Never knew this was possible on a slushbox!  Wouldn't that be bad for the tranny?

With any automatic built after the Powerglide, towing to start the car is not recommended. Anything built since then does not have a rear pump; towing the car to start it will cause severe transmission damage.

Honda Owner is correct as this was the older ones I was referring to. It wasen't something to do as a reg habit but would get you going back then with a dead battery.  :)
