Frost shields for inside windows?
« on: December 26, 2008, 10:05:19 am »
Happy Boxing Day.  :)  Years ago, I bought a set of "frost shields" (forget their real name) to keep frost from forming on the inside of my car windows. They were large plastic ovals with (~1/8"-high) ridges around the perimeter with self-sticking adhesive, and stand-offs in the middle to keep them off the window surface. You peeled of the protective tape covering the adhesive, and pressed them onto the window. They formed an air chamber that prevented the high humidity inside the car from frosting up the windows, and worked very well. Can't find them in an on-line search and I suspect they aren't made anymore. Anyone know what I'm talking about and where to find them? (They'd be great for household use, too, if they came in a large size...he says from frosty Ottawa).

Cheers,
Larry

Hahaha. Keep you fom EVIL, Safristi? I doubt it.  :) Yeah, I can't spell either, and it wasn't the Christmas wine. At my age, panty wetness is another matter altogether.  ;D

I remember those things from the old days. I haven't seen them in about 35 years or so tho. They worked a bit but not very pretty on the windshield of the car. From the days of weaker car heaters/defrosters and before the heated wires were inserted thru the rear window.

Gone like buggy whips.

They still exist. In fact, we use them every winter on the helicopters to keep the passenger windows clear. They work well enough for that purpose, but IMO there's too much distortion to consider using them on any window the driver looks through.

Anyway, I'll ask the guys on Monday where they get them from.

Great! My daughter needs them for side and rear windows in her car. Thanks!

I found boxes of them in the hangar today. They come from Custom Tarps & Filters Inc. in Brandon, Manitoba. There's not much to see, but they're listed here (scroll down to the third item on the page): http://www.globalreach.ca/custom-tarps-filters/product.html .

I don't know if we buy them locally or direct from Custom Tarps, but all their contact info is on the webpage. Maybe they can point you to a local supplier in Ottawa.

I remember them! Haven't seen one in years. Back when I was a kid they were nearly standard equipment for the VW Beetle driver...

They do bring back some memories for me as well as I also have seen them. The newer systems have basically put them out to pasture its seems. Possibly ever airport would have a idea on where to buy them locally as they probably are fairly common in the air usage.  :)

Thanks SiRCivic! Much appreciated.
