Well, that would be a shame. I picked one up too earlier today. Haven't opened the box yet though. Any suggestions for a decent one for home use?

I bought a ~$130 one from costco on jongenx's recommendation... it's been good so far (in fact I took it with me to help change a tire for my mom on the side of the road just today)

I would have thought the one above would be ok for 3-4 times a year kinda thing.  Rotate the tires, change the oil.  Neighbor has one he hasn't touched in years, I borrowed it in the summer to change the oil on the vans.  It worked fine.  It looked kina similar to the one above.  Think Mastercraft, not sure.  He buys the cheap crap, like off lease MB...  ;D

Depends how much your going to use it.  If quite often, I would get something more professional.  Just like any tool.  Use it a lot, get the good quality.

Michelin 2-ton low profile jack at Canadian Tire, 50% off ($150, normally $300).  Very heavy!
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/michelin-2-ton-low-profile-high-lift-service-jack-0091052p.html#.VEv1G5PF8nR

Avoid like the plague. My buddy got his FR-S up twice and bloody thing quit . Michelin has a 3 ton, Ive had that for a bit, lifted my truck, the Jeep, a few of.my buddies cars and the thing is great.

AVOID.  Pure sh*t; dressed to look nice.  Single piston and last time I looked not refillable.

The problem is that some company has licensed the "Michelin" name and that fools consumers into thinking that the same quality is applied to their jacks.  These are none repairable throwaway jacks of poor quality, although they look great.

I like Princess Autos POWERFIST brand of floor jacks.  Nice quality, serviceable, parts available.  Wait for a sale.

This would be a much better choice even at regular price over the Michelin on sale at $150.:

I have the blue one from AS link. I've kicked the crap out of mine....and it still works like a champ. Very pleased with it.

Too bad you guys aren't close to the US..this one goes on sale for $69 and looks nearly identical to the one from Princess

I did not have a great place to store my shop towel in the garage. In the middle of a project I would often leave it on the floor next to the tools which inevitably led to it getting misplaced right when I needed it most. I had a couple pistons of unknown origin that I had liberated from a dumpster a few years ago. Why not use them to create a paper towel holder?

Step one was to find a sturdy base. This bit of wood was left over from a yard project and at 10″ wide proved to be the perfect size.

The salvaged pistons and a light metal rod that was previously headed to scrap metal recycling completed the raw materials.

The wooden base was shorted and then four holes drilled into it. A drill press would have been better but a steady hand and a hand drill works as well. I drilled the bottom side larger to allow a nut to be placed on the end of the piston bolt but if the holes are reasonably snug this step is not required.

Assembly is extremely simple.

Pistons can be tilted either direction or welded upright depending on preference.

Installed in the garage

Very nice Arthur!

Back to the floor jacks, any thoughts on this one:

Would be good for motorcycles as well.

Wonder how it would work for cars that are low-profile.  The Michelin one (and others) were designed for low-profile (like my Mazda5 GT with the skirts)

Looks great.

I use a bungie cord to hold up my shop towel roll.

I usually have at least three rolls of shop towel on the go at any one time, scattered around the garage for easy access.  ;D

Learned I will have to move an upright piano into the house on the weekend. Luckily no big stairs, but a few steps and some corners. Any tips?

How much help will you have? They're very very heavy....

I don't have too much advice in terms of moving it but when placing it try to avoid a location where there's direct sunlight to avoid it getting in and out of tune too much.. in fact the piano movers wouldn't place it in the original place we had in mind for that very reason.
