No they should not get any money IMO
They are ALREADY getting money from the Govt. in the forms of tax incentives payroll rebates etc. to open and operate their plants in Canada. If the Government gives money to them simply to keep their plants open then they should also give equal $ to Honda Toyota etc who operate plants in Canada (probably on a per job basis just to be fair)
After all all these companies are forigen based companies. If you give money to GM it ends up back in the US and in fact since the US government have taken warrents on GM and Chrysler to take loans and actually own part of those companies now we are in part giving the money to the US government.
I don't see this as nearly the same as the US government giving money to the Big 3. If Bricklin were still in business sure give money to keep a Canadian company running but giving $ to the Big 3 is playing for JOBS (double paying really). I'd much rather see the govt offer a 6B package to attract new plants to Canada.
6B?
Are the big 3 in Canada 40% as big as the Big 3 in the US? If not why would we give them 40% as much money as US congress is giving them?
In the US even after GM gets the loan "Under its restructuring plan, GM would shut down at least nine plants and cut another 30,000 workers."
http://www.reuters.com/article/americasDealsNews/idUSTRE4B87QQ20081209Not one cent until the US plan and conditions are fully revealed. Any money given would have to come with strict conditions that the loan be called immediatley should they move any production (not just closing a plant put reducing jobs via production cutbacks) on any models also made in US plants. Are we going to give GM a couple Billion so they can close 50% of their plants in Canada?
