Rally of the Tall Pines
« on: November 24, 2008, 01:04:55 am »
Went to see this rally this weekend with GD and his mate Mark, who is also a thoroughly great guy.  I haven't seen any live motorsport in a while so it was great to get out and hear the burble of a rally exhaust, I just love the sound of those cars, takes me back to the WRC event I went to in Cardiff a few years back.  Anyway, here are some pics, hope you enjoy...

Racing Evo X

Some modified lettering on the back of one of the evo's ha ha..

Great looking new Subaru STi

Best driver there, or best car, one of the two, I think he eventually won it.

Hyundai Tiburon, I think he won last year and prior years.

Another Evo

Gotta love this car...

The spectator section

A team from the US, included Dave Mirra the ex-BMXer.  His blog from last year's race:
http://www.davemirra.com/Post/Rally-Of-The-Tall-Pines/060FBFFFF000B9AE400080004C706

The "2 Brits Racing" team, with a bit of crash damage.

I love this car, the Suzuki Swift! Of the more amatuer driver these were by far the most ballsy and entertaining, well done fellas!

Ford Capri

Another great old car, the BMW 2002.  I spoke to the owners of this and had a good look inside too, great little car, and I bet really good fun to rally!

New STi parked up

same again

The 2002 up close

Safety car, slightly safer than the other one, which caught fire after a lap of the super special stage. That was hilarious!

Bancroft, a nice little town.

It was pretty cold but the weather was good all day, not a cloud in the sky.  I think it was -9C when we left...

The Subaru out again, first one on the night stage.

Scooby at night

Number 9

The lights were amazing, and really showed up the quick changes in direction as they handbraked round the hairpins.

Another scooby, I think that was the Brits again with a piece of trunk missing.

And the all out Suzuki!

The event website:

A great weekend, cheers GD! ;D

P.S. For anyone interested in the photography most of the daytime panning shots were taken with a D300, 18-200mm VR lens, 1/125th-1/160th @ f14. The night shots were all taken with the same camera, 50mm lens, 1/30th @ f2. Or a shutter speed of 1/125th if I used the flash.
 :)

Lots of MCO entrants (3 I think) and one guy ended up first in P2 in his first performance rally.

Its a neat series.  I like it when they come to Merritt and I can take my son to see the cars as well.

Excellent shots!

And -9 is not cold for Canada, better get used to it   :rofl2: :rofl2:

Fack, I wish I had gone.  My buddy never returned my phone messages and my father felt it was too cold for his old bones.

GD, how did the new night stage compare with the old Castledine's Corner stage?

Great pics Bob!

Bancroft, a nice little town.

I've watched rock climbers on that face (while eating my donut) from the Tim Hortons.  Did you go up to the Eagle's Nest?

Dammit... I was hoping to beat Bob to the punch and post some of my far inferior shots before he showed me up.  Oh well...  a few more (many duplicated from above) won't hurt, right?  I liked the old cars the best -- seeing the 2002 and Cortina on the ragged edge of traction was pretty cool...

Oh, and Mr.T, the night stage was really neat.  Looked like a home-made go-kart track set up in someone's back field.  Grandstands, food being served... well done -- but my fingers and toes were numb by the end (body hasn't acclimatized to the winter weather yet!).

One other nugget:  the announcer at the night stage had mentioned that one of the Evos (I believe) slid off the road during the afternoon stages and fell down a 50 ft drop, hitting a few trees along the way.  After eventually hauling the car out, it was driven back to the paddock area under its own power and the driver / co-driver were apparently a little shaken but not broken.  When was the last time those open-wheeled-racing wusses did something like that?

It's such a neat event in that it's so accessible to the average car nut.  The paddock area is wide open.  Wanna lean over someone while they're wrenching under hood?  Go ahead.  Wanna talk to drivers about their experiences?  Go ahead.  Plus, all the natural beauty of the area and loads of friendly people from all over make it a really cool event.

Was the old Porche there this year?  Did you go to the spectator area near the bridge for the Iron Bridge stage?  It's rather exciting as you can only hear the cars coming until they are upon you (when they run the stage in one direction).  http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=pND0LE7enrg

Oh, that sounds like a Super Special Stage in that it was geared to showing more to the spectators.  Cool.

Andrew Comrie-Picard has finally upgraded to a new Evo.  Perhaps hosting the rally series on TV helped foot the bill?  :D

Mr.T... sadly the ol' 911 wasn't there this year.

There was a Lada though.  Surprisingly, that team didn't win.   :rofl2:

Cheers guys, no tripod Inco, as they were too quick past the corner, you have to pan with them.  Although my fingers were getting mighty numb at one point, luckily I can still press the shutter release with thick gloves on.

Shame you didn't get to go MrT, also on the ironbridge bit I think the final car hit the bridge as it went through, it was just out of view for us though. Doh!

In mid October my wife and I were in Bancroft on a road tour.  I decided to take a short drive on Bronson Road (Iron Bridge stage road).  Heading south (cars moving left to right in spectator area), that blind corner and bridge sure come up on you in a hurry - even at 40 km/hr!
