Bridgestone Blizzak WS 60 with UNI-T

IMO all these are better choice except the Pirelli.  I always hear mixed comments about winter snows from Michelin, not that they are bad but that they are not as good as a Toyo.  My local tire dealer is cleaned out of Toyo but still has plenty of Michelin.

From driving on Primacy Alpin PA3's and Pirrelli' sottozero 240's I feel the Michelin is the better choice. I haven't driven any cars equipped with pilot alpins or X ice Xi2 but have read reviews of the X-ice which rate them as among the best snow tires available.

A question for Altima1. Have you drove vehicles with all the tires listed by the original poster as well as yourself or are you engaging in the same type of uninformed speculation which had another person here claiming that all season tires with a couple of hundred pounds of sand in the trunk is just as good as winters with out ever using a winter tire?

Hey...don't get twisted here, take a deep breath.  I have spent many years in the auto industry, test driven many cars with many brands of tires.  Look at my post, IMO, means "In my opinion".  And no I'm no stupid enough to believe that all seasons will get you through the winter, at this time I have 4 Toyo Observe on the Altima, 4 Pirelli Winter Carving on the Sentra, and 4 Dunlop Graspics on the Echo.  What is you source on the X-Ice rating as the best?

Oddly enough I do know what IMO means but over the last 4 days i have encountered a dozen people offering opinions on things, both in real life and on the web, that they have NO experience of any sort with that I'm starting to be Intolerant of opinions offered with no explanation of where this opinion came from. Whether its personal experience, reviews read or 5th hand info from your mothers hairdressers post carrier who's name no one can remember If some one can say what led them to this opinion then i can judge whether it should carry any weight. Perhaps it's a case of my not being familiar with your background that others here may be . I know Wing has just offered his opinion after your last reply, but I do know he does test cars and so assume he has tried the tires he comments on and am willing to take that opinion at face value.

as to the review which gave the X-ice a good rating  http://www.consumersearch.com/snow-tires

I also believe Wing posted in the forum on the X-ice where i believe he said it was very good

3 best winters IMO.

Okay my question then would be... for buying winter tires
1. Do you go ahead and buy cheap winter tires now. (Do knowing you dont have the best winter tires affect you?)
2. Go through the trouble of getting one of these tires (even though it will mean more cost and time; most likely shipping from states)
3. Drive on A/S and wait until next year or when supply of those 3 are more available.

Option 2 may not even possible if those tires are sold out everywhere.

(Option 3 was mainly the point I was trying to get across on previous thread of waiting a year while driving on A/S)

Cheap may mean no sizing for your particular vehicle, ie. if you go -1 on size.  Or if you buy some really no name brand you have no idea what you're getting into, quality, traction in snow vs ice, durability, hard to balance etc..  If I would go cheaper I would only consider CT's Goodyear Nordic, they are well rated by owners, have nationwide coverage for warranty.  I once went cheap , blew a tire mid winter and no replacement was available, that sucked.

tcm2008:

I know that it is difficult choosing between tires and I don't mean to make the choice more difficult for you BUT might I suggest another tire for you to consider...the Yokohama Iceguard IG20.  I just got it this year in the same size that you are look for.  I was considering all of the same tires that you are looking at and some of the tires that others have mentioned.  In the end it came down to the following 3 tires:

1.  Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3

2.  Michelin Xice Xi2

3.  the Yokos

I went with the Yokos for a couple of reasons.  First, they were cheaper than the Michelins and Yoko also had a better mail in rebate.  Second, although I do most of my driving in Toronto/GTA I do sometimes drive up to Barrie, Collingwood, etc., which kind of ruled out the performance winters like the Pilot Alpin. Besides the Yoko and the Xi2 are T rated vs H or V rated and the difference while slightly noticeable is not huge and a T rating allows me to go fast enough.

The things I really like about the Yokos are 1:  they are really comfortable and 2:  although they are multicell like the Blizzaks, the Yoko compound runs through the whole tire and not just the first 55%

As for the Xi2, when I bought my tires no one really had any experience with it

SMS of course nobody had experience with it, it was just released in September.  I had a sneak preview of the tire last winter though.

As far as Black Hatch's question about getting cheap winers to tied you over... well I'd say that really depends on your situation.

A) can you afford to do it IE: buy a new set next year
B) What vehicle are you driving?  Which tires does it currently have -- IE: for your RX-8 well there would be no alternative get teh cheapies or you aren't driving at all, but perhaps a different vehicle may have more adequate tires and grip available.

I bought cheapies last year for my Mazda3 and I easily sold them mid-summer!  They were horrible winter tires on the ice, but were good on snow and they saved my butt when I drove up to tremblant in a big storm.  My all-seasons would have been suicide and I was glad I bought them even though they weren't the best tire I never got stuck, unlike all my neighbours on their stock all-season tires.

Just goes to show........even "bad" winter tires are better than "good" all seasons when it comes to winter driving.

FWIW, I've had a set of four Toyo Garrit Winters (215ZR55X17) on the RX-8 for five Winters now. They have that Microbit compound featuring walnut shell microbits to dig and bite into the ice surface somewhat like ice studs. They've been excellent Winter tires and have hardly worn at all.

Even with winter tires, you can still get stuck. London got pounded with snow on Friday night, and even with winter tires, I almost got stuck 4 times in the P5.

almost -- see but you didn't ;).  Sure you can get stuck but it reduces those chances.

I don't plan on getting stuck this year, 4WD including lockers and winters ...

Madzda6 has Garrit Toyo Winters.

Interesting about using and then selling cheapo winter tires...
