Test Drive:
2008 BMW M3 Coupe

2008 BMW M3 CoupeThough BMW has "softened" the M3 to appeal more to mainstream buyers, with its new 414-hp V8 engine and seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission, "it is still one of the most exhilarating rides out there," says contributor Peter Bleakney.

Today I saw a young man driving one of these in my neighbourhood. He had his "N" sign displayed on the back, as he was a novice driver.

Don't worry.  He'll be fine.  It will be in the shop for repairs more than on the road.... Grin

Hey, giving a 16 year old a 400 hp car is just a father's way of showing his love. It is also hte reason we have graduated licensing, too!

It's also incredibly stupid, akin to putting a loaded gun in a toddler's hands.  Tongue

V8 vs L6       The fast car noise of my early life was a OHC L6 in a Jaguar. I guess for those brought up in NA it was  a OHV V8.     Whatever turns your crank. I prefer the L6 soundtrack.

When I tried to buy a new BMW earlier this year I was told that there was a shortage of 3-er coupes because the M3 had just arrived in euland and all the bodyshells were being diverted to M3.

Having just about got used to the DSG in my GTI I would really like to try the version in the M3.

I wonder if it is worth the extra money over a 335i coupe.

I don't think so.  The 335i already has performance that bests most previous gen M3's and is a LOT less dough than the M3.  On a bang/buck scale, the 335i beats the M3 by a large margin.  The M3 has lots of snob appeal though.

The real giant killer is the 135i.

I sat in a 135 and found it too small ( I am 6ft and over 240 lbs)   So a 335 with 150kg missing by the use of more aluminium would have been my choice.  Same weight then as a 135 near enough but more comfortable.

I would agree that the 335i coupe is the better deal UNLESS you are serious about going to the track, then the M3 is the one to have. But how many of us would track an $80K car? Not me, methinks.

The decision to purchase an M3 is no more made on the basis of "value" than is the decision to purchase a 52" LCD TV.  Both are more than any of us need, and we could get along just as happily with a lesser, "better value" piece of equipment.

But I'd still rather have the M3 is my garage.  Smiley

I have a 19" CRT television, not even stereo.  I bought it in the winter of 2002 as my mom came to stay with us when she was terminally ill and wanted to watch TV.  We hadn't owned a TV since 1983.

I figure an old 19" mono CRT TV = Toyota Corolla.  I suppose I had no choice back in March when we were car shopping.

How about my new G3 Saint skis?  Skis = Subaru Forester!

So Ludia Li (BMW World Ambassador as the top sales consultant for BMW worldwide for 2008), who works out of Richmond BC ownes some of her success to the market perhaps?
