Doors freezing
« on: November 18, 2008, 09:47:33 am »
Below -5C, doors freeze on my Mazda 2003 MPV.  Even the key hole is plugged and have to wriggle the key in and rock it back and forth to open the door latch.  The back doors stay frozen and do not thaw until after three or four hours of driving.  My kids use the front door to go through.

This seems to be a common problem for MPV.  Any suggestions on improving this situation?

Thanks,  Sri.

Spraying the rubber door seals with silicone might help.  Wipe off any excess.

Lock de-icer should help temporarily to allow key access.

I spray aerosol graphite or Teflon lubricant in the locks every year to keep them from freezing, and treat the rubber with silicone as well.

I recommend a product called Silicone Emulsion which is sold at most dealerships for a resonable price. I know the GM dealers charge around $5.50-$6.00 approximately for it. This does work extremely well. You just wipe it into the rubber seals with the applicator supplied. Mix it up 1st in the bottle with the applicator before you apply it. Even W-D-40  will work in the locks but use a proper lock spray as the WD40 acts a Dirt Magnet and will help clog it up.  :)

Yes, do use a dry lubricant.  The graphite and Teflon lubricants I use are both dry.
