2003 Mazda MPV: All weather/all season tires for winter.
« on: November 17, 2008, 11:12:32 am »
From a confused Newbie from London, Ontario;

Tires on our recently purchased 2003 Mazda MPV (no ABS) need to be replaced and we are looking at three choices:  Good Year Allegra (supposed to have good traction in snow based on the reviews I read), Nokian WRG2 (all weather) or Good Year Nordic (winter)

The advantage with the first two is that I do not have to buy another set of tires in the spring.

Any comments on how good the all season/all weather tires will be for winter driving for this van?

Also, please suggest any other all season/all weather tires that work reasonably well in winter.

Thanks,

Sri.

How much driving will you be doing each year, and what is your driving style?  Also important, what type of winter conditions will you encounter?

Ideally, you will want a dedicated winter set, and a separate set (usually all seasons) for the rest of the year.  Long term costs are very similar provided you keep that vehicle for a long time.

If you drive limited kms per year, or simply can't afford (or don't want) 2 sets, get the Nokian WRG2, or alternately (and much more cheaply), a set of H-rated (or higher speed rated) winter tires and use those year round.
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow - who wouldn't love the internal combustion engine?  ;D
