Rust Proofing for P5?
« on: November 03, 2008, 01:19:38 am »
Is it worth getting the P5 oil sprayed at this time of its life?

It hasn't been sprayed at all since new (2002). I was thinking of getting one of those $90 jobs, to last one season.

Mine: 2004 Acura TSX
Family: 2005 Honda Odyssey EX, 2006 BMW 330i

I have sprayed down my '87 religiously for years, and it seems to have slowed rust down. Especially make a point of making sure the fuel lines, brake lines, and known rust traps (like around the fuel tank) stay nice and greasy. Not a permanent fix, but keeps the decay in the bodywork roughly similar with that of the running gear.

Tried Krown this spring and it seemed to disappear awfully fast, like it was too light. Must be a nice penetrant though, if it could be covered with something heavier.

When I used to go traveling for half the year I'd park my old '72 510 (510's were notorious for rusting into nothing) and check how effective my 'treatments' were when I got back. Engine oil was 100% effective with the car sitting like that, WD40 was useless, you could see the rust growth.

I would say yes it worth having sprayed especially if you plan on keeping this vehicle for years to come. Unless its a real rust bucket already it will definitely help keep the body in good shape. I even spray my 1972 truck about every 2nd year as it never sees winter at all but stays like new for doing it anyways.  :)

Sounds great!

Nice coat of wax + winter tires and rims + rust proofing for the winter. :)

The Proteges and Protege5's are bad for rust, especially around the rear 1/4 panel where it meets the rear bumper.  Get it Krowned and also ask them to spray some extra in that seam I described.

The car should last you a good long while mechanically, but the body will go if you don't keep it treated with Krown at least every 2 years, preferrably every year.
2004 TSX. Lovin' every minute of it!
