Allignment and balancing done, however?
« on: November 02, 2008, 08:20:15 pm »
So I've put on winter rims and tires last week and decided to do an allignment and get the wheels balanced, since there was a bit of a shake in the steering wheel when doing between 80-100 kms/h.
This is the fourth winter they've been on.
By the way this is on a 04 Honda Accord.

So needless to say my car still has the same symptoms...I think the shaking is worse now. >:(

Should I go back to the shop that did my alignment or investigate further.  The brakes are almost new and there was no shaking with the all season tires and aluminum rims ???

Can anyone offer me some avenues to find out what it could be?

I'd say a tire is out of balance.

I would suggest Road Force Balancing.  It's superior to regular balancing.  If it's not a balance issue, then there is a cord possibly broken in the tire itself.

After rotating the tires, experienced similar issue.

Went back to the dealership(Downtown Toyota), asked them to check for alignment/balancing issues, they laughed it off 'commenting on the work order' that the customer is still using winter tires in summer, change tires was suggested. Using Nokian WRG2 tires.

I went to another dealership (Scarborough Lexus Toyota), asked them to do Road Force Balancing. It feels like a different car.

As incredible as it may seem, many balance machines are out of balance to start with.

However, like Rocket mentioned, it could be a bad tire.

Are you running aftermarket, multi-fit steel rims? If so, I'd first check to make sure the rims are centred properly on the lugs. If the tech was careless in mounting them, then you could certainly get some vibration even if the tires were properly balanced.

If multi-fit rims aren't the problem, I'd probably go back and ask them to balance the tires again (at no extra charge).

If that doesn't take care of it, and there's no obvious damage to the wheels or tires that would prevent a decent balance, then finding another shop with a Road Force balancer is probably the way to go.

:iagree:  If the rims are multifits and they were not tightened up properly. that would do it.

Thanks for all the points, I'll take the wheels off today and make sure they go on the right way.
I have to find a shop with a Road Force balancing machine
