Would appreciate some advice, please!
« on: October 21, 2008, 12:43:47 am »
Hi folks,

I am seriously considering making a deal on an 03 Outback. It's being sold by a Subby dealership and it appears to be in real nice shape with only 75K on it.

The asking price was $13,995 but it has been for sale for a long time (i think at least the summer).  I am driving a basic corolla CE 2004 and 129K with manual trans, AC, CD Keyless, and crank windows...pretty bare bones, but in fantastic shape as most is highway KM and I've babied it (i'm the original owner). It was certified in June as I almost sold it then. New front brake pads were installed.

The dealer is offering $6,500 for mine and will bring his price down to $12,500. The balance owing works out to something like $7,800 tax in (depending on what he ultimately gets from the wholesalers for the corolla. I know this is lower than what I can get on the market in a private sale. But I do need to factor in some tax savings (about $800) plus the convenience of it. I wanted to get at least $9000 for my car, and 9,500 would be more like it. Do you think this is expecting to much for my car? Mileage is up there plus it's standard... so maybe it is too much.

I told him I would consider an even $7000 plus a hitch installation and new tires, either winter or all-season if the stock tires didn't pass safety.

Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Search on autotrader would indicate the price you want ($9,000) is for a better equipped, lower kms Corolla at retail.  Having a base model, stick, kms aren't too far out of whack (depending if you bought the '04 model in '03) counts against you relative to the competition.

Selling it privately, you'll have problems due to supply (there are tons of them out there).  The dealer would likely have to sell your Corolla at a loss because they'll never see $9k for it even as a swap.

There are a number of people in the dealer biz though here on CTC likely ready to chime in later today!

I entered the info provided into the Black Book tool available here:

http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/services/gmac/appraise-trade-in

I didn't enter in the data for the Scooby...what model designation is it?  Base, Limited, etc...

Here's what I found on your Rolla:

Based on the kilometers entered and the options selected, your vehicle's classification is appraised as: Below Average.  Depending on your vehicle's condition, the value may be appraised within the High and Low range. * less Reconditioning Costs

Low: $3,667.00     High: $5,917.00
If it flies, floats or f#%&s...rent it.

take the deal. Selling privately is a nightmare plus, it looks like you are getting excellent value. I really doubt you would get 9K for a 5 year old car when new ones list for under 15K

New ones list for 15????? that's not quite accurate when you factor in all the taxes we pay in this country, plus admin, plus freight. A "15000" corolla is nearly 20 out the door

I told the guy I was going to try selling privately, but that i was still interested.. we'll see...

i listed my car on craiglist and kijiji and got interest already, but whether that translates into a sale, is anothe thing!

Not that I have to sell you on my car, but whoever buys it (if I ultimately sell it) is going to be one happy owner... I almost regret putting in syn oil now...I treated that thing better than most of my family members! The service manager at toyo couldn't beleive the condition it was in when I had it certified in June. I still have 50% of the rear drums and the front pads were just changed and they were original... I've owned a few cars in my life and I've never had this few problems with a vehicle.. I am only selling b/c i've outgrown it and need a bigger car like a wagon/small SUV.

ANyhow, thanks for the input folks...
