Test Drive:
2009 Hyundai Genesis

2009 Hyundai Genesis V6The new Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan could be "the surprise package of the 2009 model year," opines contributor Bob McHugh.  "It offers amenities and performance comparable with luxury competitors like the BMW 5 Series...but at a substantially lower price point."

Senior partner at my firm just picked up one of these.  From riding in it, without looking at the badge, I'd guess it was a Lexus or Merc.  Build quality, interior materials, sound dampening, and refinement are all absolutely faultless.

Before anyone scoffs, think back to 1989 and the intro of the LS400.  Mercedes and BMW dismissed it, and paid for their mistake.  Yes, Hyundai is introducing a luxury car as we crash into recession, but so did Toyota in 1989.  Toyota stuck it out, grabbed market share and was well positioned with brand recognition and reputation when the economy turned around.

Amazing product.
No place I'd rather be...

But Toyota created a new brand.  When my wife saw/heard of the Genesis and saw the price, her first reaction was: What! that much for a Hyundai?

To me, that is the biggest risk Hyundai is taking, keeping it in the same brand rather than a new one like Lexus and Acura.

Gorgeous car for sure based on the sedan I saw when I bought my Forester.  Lets hope it does well.

On the topic of 'missed oppportunities', Hyundai should look three dealerships over and learn now from the tale of woe of Mazda, the remaining of the 'big four'  import brands without an upscale step in it's line up.

At one point, the most expensive car in Mazda's stable was a loaded MPV.... ::)

The Genesis, Azera, and the Veracruz, along with a version of the upcoming Tuscon (rebodied) would be a great 4 car line up.

I'd love to drive one of these - I'm extremely impressed with what I've seen and read.  Hats off to Hyundai.  Here's hoping they come out with a full-on sport version.

The 290 horsepower 3.8-litre V6 is a smooth, willing powerplant that provides effortless acceleration and is very quiet at freeway speeds. Official fuel consumption ratings are 11.4/7.2 L/100 km (city/highway). It's mated to an equally smooth six-speed automatic "Shiftronic" transmission that comes with a manual console shift gate -- no fancy paddles on the steering wheel here.

I think those are pretty good numbers.  Should be quite of few on the road I'm thinking for that price.

Precisely.  That's the problem.  Nobody doubts that this is a great car.  But the first LS didn't share the same badge as a Tercel, whereas this DOES share a badge with an Accent.  In that sense, I'd say the Genesis has more in common with the VW Phaeton than it does the Lexus LS.

^ Except that you’d buy three of these for the price of a phaeton.

I think this is a great car and I don’t get this badge snobbery thing in NA. The corvette shares the badge with some mighty POS’s too, but I never once heard someone say $70k is too much for a chevy. ::)

Well it's appealing enough to someone who stole one on the weekend:

Wild ride for Stoney Creek car salesman

By John Burman, The Hamilton Spectator
HAMILTON - The test drive from hell started when a man admiring a $47,000 plus Hyundai Genesis suddenly grabbed the keys and dove in behind the wheel.
What followed was a wild ride up and down Parkdale Avenue North Tuesday afternoon that ended with an arrest in Brantford.
Hamilton police say a man walked into Hamilton Hyundai around 2:30 p.m. and took the top of the line Genesis shortly afterwards.
“He was walking around in the showroom and asked for the keys to one,” sales manager Sean Wilson said today.
“There was something about him,” says Wilson, who has learned a lot about human nature in his 11 years in car sales. “I figured I would walk around with him.”
The man went over to the Genesis parked outside, asked a few questions and asked Wilson to unlock it. Then he said he wanted to hear it run and snatched the keys from the salesman’s hand, jumped behind the wheel and started it up.
“I hopped in the back and next thing he’s doing 100 kilometres an hour up Parkdale, telling me to get out.”
When Wilson refused to get out the first time the man stopped the car, he drove the wrong way at high speed up one side of Parkdale against oncoming traffic.
The Genesis, says Wilson, “has 290 horses and he used all of them.”
“He stopped again and yelled, ‘Do you want to get out now?’
“So I said OK and got out.”
As Wilson headed back to the dealership, the car disappeared.
About 4:30 p.m., the same man drove into the Brantford Hyundai dealership on Powerline Road and a salesperson noticed the car had no plates and a Hamilton Hyundai price sticker on it.
The driver claimed he was making an inter-dealer delivery and said he wanted another car or a ride back to Hamilton.
A quick check with Hamilton revealed the car was stolen. The dealership called the OPP and stalled the driver until police arrived.
A 36-year-old Stoney Creek man has been charged in Brantford with possession of stolen property worth more than $5,000. He is charged in Hamilton with dangerous driving and theft over $5,000.
The car hadn’t returned to Hamilton by midday today but Wilson was told “it’s all in one piece.”

That's one Genesis to stay away from. Unbelieveable. Only in Hamilton  :P

Love the Genesis. Saw first one in the wild on the highway last week. It'd probably get my money if I was looking for a $36-44ish luxury sedan.

That's not really the point.  It's a luxury car without a luxury car badge.

You can't compare expensive sports cars to expensive luxury cars.  Sports car buyer look at performance, and a car can perform quite well regardless of the badge.  Luxury car buyers look at luxury, and in the market today, one significant part of "luxury" is prestige.  A Hyundai or Toyota or Volkswagen badge doesn't carry prestige like a Lexus or Audi badge does.

I still won't buy a Hyundai It just a discount brand to me. Its like going into Walmart, thats dressed up to look like the bay. Its still a Walmart underneath no matter how you dress it. I have nothing against the brand. But its a discount brand to me. :)

I rather show off in BMW or a lexus. Than a Hyundai. ;)

How much for a chevy. ;)

I dunno - just keeping this as a Hyundai might not be a bad idea. I find it refreshingly honest for them to be putting this car out in an entirely unpretentious manner and stating "We are Hyundai - this is the best car we make." rather than fabricating some artificial and convoluted name to represent a separate luxury line.  Not to mention the substantial associated costs of separate or additional dealerships nation-wide.  That would sure see the price of these things creep up, which would not be good.

Sure, maybe they won't grab the buyers who seek a luxury brand for the pure snob effect. But they have a real shot at the buyer seeking quality, luxury and value.  I think they might find that there are a few of those.
