Would P225/60R16 tires fit on rims that currently have P225/50R16 tires on them?

My '99 Grand Am GT has stock tires on it (P225/50R16) and stock rims, and I have a lightly used set of P225/60R16 all-seasons that the previous owner of my house left behind, so I was wondering if I could use them on my stock rims?

Thanks in advance!

They'll fit on the rims just fine, but those tires will be way too big to fit on your car.

If they fit in the wheel wells you'd be 7% faster then what your speedo reads...

Stock size tires that came with it back in '99 was P225/50R16 so size should be fine :)

Really? I guess I don't understand this 50/60 ratio difference stuff... if the tire is the same size (16") that doesn't mean the speedo will show the speed readings the same?

16" is the diameter of the hole (so the outer diameter of the rim it will fit on).

the profile (50, 60, etc...) in short says how tall the sidewall is (from the rim to the tread).

The first number is width (of the tread area).

Playing around with this helps to understand:

Anything outside of around 2.5% difference over OEM recommended, isn't recommended. ;)

Cool, thanks for the explanation. I'll play with the calculator later tonight :)

This leads me to a question about the winter tires I just got... they are 215/55R16... if my stock all-season tires were 225/50R16, are the new winter tires I just picked up today ok and safe to drive? The tire guy that sold me them lead me to believe they are fine.

EDIT: I just played around with that link you posted. Seems the new winter tires are only 1.8% off from the OEM, so I should be fine :) cool! I do see now that the all-season tires the previous owner of my house left behind (225/60R16) are 7.1% different, so I understand now why they are not safe. 7.1% is a much larger difference than 1.8%. Cool stuff. Thanks everyone for helping me to understand this tire stuff!

ASSUMING that your stock size is correct (check the sticker on your doorjamb to make sure!), then play with the calculator... it'll answer your question.

(hint: yes). ;)

lol you're fast, you posted faster than I could edit my post :)

And I just checked my car door, it is definitely stock 225/50R16.... well actually its P225/50R16... whats the P mean? Time to do some reading...

EDIT: Ok, so the "P" stands for Passenger, "P-Metric sizing is simply the North American way of designating a metric sizing system."

So they are one in the same. Nice!

Thanks again everyone!

I've used the tire size comparison from the miata forum for years. The one provided here is even better! I was glad to find it.

It allows you to compare several different sizes of tires at the same time.

The only advantage of the miata formula (for me) is the overlay that shows one tire superimposed over the other.
