I guess I don't understand why auto cos keep reaching into areas that they know little or nothing about; plus doesn't seem to me to be a great time to intro a new pick-up. Admittedly, it is still a concept and may not see real time.  ??? ???

"introduced initially to markets in Europe, South America, South Africa and Australia" not sure it will make to the NA market

Maybe they figure it will sell in the rest of world

VW is not a complete stranger to trucks/utes...

Plus, Touareg is quite a stout vehicle..., and all those different commercial vans and trucks they made...

Volkswagon actually built some fairly heavy vehicle years ago and some of their vans did haul a fair load in them. Drove one as a kid for a grocery store and used to p/u sides of beef with it. Didn't go very fast but it did get us back to the store when loaded.  :)

Thinking about it, we probably put too much into a company's past/heritage.   If they haven't done a truck in a while, all the people involved with those projects are long gone.   I mean, the Leafs have won a few cups, but that doesn't mean the guys there now can!  So, they could be "out of touch" now if the company hasn't done it for a while.   And yeah, it is probably not a great time to bring a truck unless they throw a in motor that makes sense.. and/or unless it pure utility for commercial use.

I'm not convinced VW needs a pickup, but it does look nice.  Will it get the V10 TDI out of the Touareg?

When I was in Cuba last year, VW heavy trucks can be seen everywhere, also tour buses.

I am sure I remember a vehicle with the front end of the old split screen VW camper and a euro-style pickup back. Euro-style being one where the bed  sides as well as the tailgate folded down.  years ago.

Later.Checked and not only was there such a beast but it even came in crew cab !   Cannot find a picture.

I've seen those too - neat!  I didn't know they were a production model, though, I had thought that it was an owner modification to turn them into a pickup.

I've seen a few in Ontario - so they may have been sold here.  Yeah kind of a forward cab trucks like you see overseas and in the caribbean .   Bed seemed pretty practical since with the sides down it become a flat bed..

VW has one pickup here in Brazil, pickup only in name, it's nothing more than a GOL (compact hatch) with a bed. But it's a crap as a pickup, we have a 2006 model here in the company, god, it's a complete junk.

To me, pickups is a Big 3 territory.

TPL when I said slow I meant in a really really slow way for power. They were almost death traps when merging into busy traffic as it would take around 15-20 secs to get up to 60MPH alone. The average 4 cyl engine could outrun them by miles they were so slow.   :)

Back in the days Barrie when you and I were young lads LOTS of smaller cars took 15 secs to get to 60 mph.  less of them for you in Canada than for me in the UK.   8) ;D
