First Winter Tyres
« on: September 21, 2008, 08:52:20 pm »
As you can see from my spelling, this will be the first time I have ever bought Winter tyres/tires.

I have no idea how much to spend or what brands to go for, I think I need P225/60R16's but will check tomorrow.  Also why does everyone seem to mount them on steel wheels rather than just get them put on the alloys they already have?

And when do people purchase them (as in what month), as it was 25C today but I don't want to be caught out if everyone buys at the same time.

Thanks in advance.

Buy them before the end of september but don't mount them until mid November.

People buy steelies for 2 reasons (maybe more)

1) Easy to swap, saves wear on tires and cheaper to mount every year
2) Alloys get RUINED here you will quickly find out the amount of salt used pits alloy rims.

Depends on the tires
I your area I would look at a ICE Bear, you would probably have more icy roads then road with a lot of snow on them
Get the car, then the tires

Go to the Tire trends website and look at winter packages for the car you are buying.... easy.

if you buy from tire trends you save PST but have to pay shipping.   If you buy locally you'll pay PST but no shipping... equally easy.

As for question 2     it is doubleplusungood to mount and dismount low profile tires more than you have to. Possibility of damaging the bead and sidewall as well as bending the rim of the alloy wheel.

When you put them on depends what kind you buy and how hard you drive. Some winter tires are very soft, I've seen Nokians that look as though they were made of sponge. Some Toyo's IIRC are also very winter-only. Others types however are designed much more to cope with dry roads, the Yokohamas and Michelins I use cope well with running year-round, and the vaunted 'all year' Nokian WR's are actually just a relabeled former winter only tire.

I have run alloys through the winter for many years and have not had a problem with pitting.  I only keep my cars 4 years maximum though.

When you buy, you should check the online dealers and don't be afraid of Tire Rack in the US as they will quote you a price with the shipping, taxes, duty and brokerages fees included.  I have had good experience with them in the past.

Roger Fowler Tires in Kitchener will store your winter tires & wheels (for a fee) for you if they do the swap.

The type of tire you need depends on the car you drive and if you do a lot of out of town driving.  A fwd car in Kitchener will work ok, but rear wheel drive is very difficult.  Winter tires will be much safer in any case.

Kitchener winters vary considerably, with last year being a bad one.

If you are looking for 225/60/16's I will be selling a set of Nokian WRs that are <1 yr old and have been used for ~3K.  They are basically new.

Bob you'll have to tell Morty what vehicle if you want wheels as well.   For offset and bolt circle.

Just the tires Bob.   They were mounted on the factory alloys.

Turbo, you should be fine waiting until the end of next month when you'll (presumably) have more space to store the wheels/tires not in use.

Not to beat a dead horse, but to quote wheels I will need to know the year, make and exact model.

Quebec will be needing a lot of winter tires this year with the mandatory winter law. Tires are going to be scarce and early is better. However, even discounting the PQ law... It is always wise to buy early when there is better selection.
