High-res gallery, inside and out: http://www.autoblog.com/photos/2011-chevy-volt/1039469/full/Frankly, I think it's downright embarrassed the Prius and the new Insight on the styling front. Best-looking "eco car" so far, IMO. As for the rest of the car, let's see whether it is actually a better economic choice than a mainstream compact car. I'm not holding my breath, at least until fuel prices double again. The Prius, for all its wonderful technology, makes a lot less economic sense than a Corolla.

Well I suppose its what a Volt WILL look like if/when it actually goes to production. But styling mockups are along way from having a production ready car.

It's fantastic. I didn't really care for the concept much but the production version is really impressing me.
Thing is, I'd want a diesel or small gasser in it over the extended range EV system it'll have. Shame. But the design is absolutely killer IMO both inside and out. |

blah blah blah Toyota blah blah blah I feel your pain; you've got a GM, it's worth squat and you owe on it.
Dude, if the displacment is EXACT, it's not "all new". The intake is different, the VVT is now on both sets of valves In the automotive world "all new" often means somewhat different

The interior is very well though out and looks almost too good. The issue with Volt is not its electric range, its looks or not even the price tag. It's parking lot charging stations or rather absence of thereof. Battery tech is still expensive so there is only so much they can do about the range for the given price. But if one knew there are chargers at every shopping mall and you get 60-80% recharge in 20 minutes (thats what I-MIEV does IIRC) it would change the public perception on EVs. Range extender will work for now, but to really compete with Japanese and now Chinese cars (BYD) they really need to get Li-ion for less, maybe even buy over somebody and start making everything in-house. |

Nice looking. Don't like the electronic IP. Digital speedos etc are so 80s.
The big problem is I have serious doubts about GMs ability to actually deliver this Car on time on budget.
At the very least maybe they will offer both EV and GAS only versions (or even delisle) as it looks like a nice package. |

It looks good and the interior and exterior design fits the type of car. However, the big question is how it will work and how much will it cost to buy and run. I can't wait to see car magazines testing the Volt for 0-60 mph and skidpad numbers... j/k |

I hope its a sucess too. But there is no chance the Volt saves their bacon. Even if its a perfect sucess 1st year production is only projected to be 10,000 cars. That's a tiny drop in the bucket. Even if they make 2k profit per car itsonce again a tiny drop in the bucket compared to their losses.
It will be great if they can become a lomg term leader in this type of car but they need to survive long enough to do it. A sucessful launch of the Cruze and it selling well with little to no discounts will do far more to save Chev than the limited run Volt. |

am i the only person who thinks electric cars are a big waste of time? batteries are NOT eco friendly at all and the production of electricity is nuclear. we are suppose to think that is good? i would rather see everyone go to diesel or bio diesel first while they work on other alternatives. |

Kevlar, don't think EV's are the future for the masses either. I'm not really interested in one at the moment. Do like the Volt a lot though, so wish another powertrain is offered (or similar vehicle comes out) but doubt the 'Volt' would be offered with conventional engines.
The replacement of batteries is not something I'd be talking about to the media GM: First-generation Volt likely to lose money Amy Wilson Automotive News September 16, 2008 - 10:30 am ET UPDATED: 9/16/08 12:41 p.m. EDT DETROIT -- General Motors isn't likely to turn a profit on its first-generation Chevrolet Volt. "Most of our Gen 1 technologies, I don't know that I've ever seen a situation where we make money, particularly when you load all the costs in," GM COO Fritz Henderson said today. "So I don't necessarily think this is going to be the exception." Henderson spoke after GM revealed the production design for the Volt at its 100th anniversary celebration here. The Volt is a plug-in electric car that GM is developing for sale starting in November 2010. Despite the high costs of the project, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said he hasn't given up on the possibility of first-generation profits. "We've made very, very conservative assumptions on battery warranty," Lutz said. "And that huge lump of battery warranty in the cost calculation helps diminish the profitability." Lutz wouldn't provide specifics but said GM is assuming it will have to replace "quite a few" batteries. If battery reliability and life proves to be better than assumptions, GM can relax "some of that scary warranty provision," giving the Volt a shot at earlier profitability, he said. GM is testing about 10 vehicles with parts intended for the production Volt, Lutz said. But those vehicles don't have the production Volt shell that GM displayed today. The test cars are being built on GM's global compact front-wheel-drive architecture, which will underpin the Volt and the coming Chevrolet Cruze compact. A GM spokesman said 33 of those test Volts will be produced this year. In 2009, GM will build about 100 Volts with the production body, Lutz said. They'll be used for internal test fleets and media drives. |

They havne't announced it for sure yet. One more reason I'm skeptical. Big 3 are lobbying US concress for massive loans supposedly mostly for production of alternative fuel EV vehicles. They are also supposedly counting on massive Govt. rebates etc to help them reduce the actual purchase price of the Volt to try and make it affordable. |

Ah...YES Oh, wait, and the other two playing with the Hadron Collider who now are waiting for the wheel to be invented see, even if today all the gas we burn in ICEs instead we used to make electricity locally and then charge EVs we would likely be saving millions of barrels of oil a day around the world. Thats due to the efficiency of an electric motor plus lower losses on motor-to-wheels transmission. There are alternative ways to make electricity - vote green and you'll see Making batteries (as well as pretty much anything else in the modern world) is not good for nature, BUT if the batteries dont contain heavy metals, like cadmium , and last each for 5 and more years it is way better than having to deal with 120+ grams of CO2 per km driven in a regular car.. |

I heard Lutz on Charlie Rose say he hoped it wouldn't be anymore than 40K USD. |

I'm liking it Decent styling inside & out and the technobling is there for those that embrace such things. V1.0 is still two years away for the first run of 10,000 units and then the numbers are supposed to ramp up each year after that so it'll be a while before they are truly "available". V2.0 Volt with improvements in super capacitors/batteries and whatever onboard power generation (diesel, fuel cell, compressed air, Dilithium crystals) should really be something. |

I wonder if the Chevy Cruze and the Chevy Volt share a platform. While the powertrain and the surface detailing is completely different, the silhouette looks remarkably similar to me (save for the Volt's Kammback).
