My newest purchase - aircooled.

Well I was going to wait until I got it home but inspired by the VW Camper cross country article I'll post this up now - I've bought a new car off a co-worker of mine. A 1962 VW Beetle for $500. Its rust free with some paint coming off (and a dent or two) but has some fuel line clogging issues which I'll need to resolve once I get it home. Apparently the engine is rebuilt as well. I've never really thought of myself as Beetle sort of person but I've always wanted to get something rear engined and air cooled plus I like the 60s examples much more than the 70s because of all the neat trim and vintage feel. The kids will likely enjoy it as "Herbie".

A few pictures in front of his house. Next week I should get it home to play around with.

not the early 90's  porsche I was expecting but really, I should have known better.

I drove one of these once in Mexico. It was pretty cool. The one that I was driving didn't have a second gear so you had to rev the :censor: out of it and go straight to third.

Ha!  I too was inspired by the same article you read...just not THAT inspired!  That's a great find AD.

I"m going to tell my wife about you AD...with all of your projects, she may not think the cars and aircraft aren't that bad after-all!

I'm going to repaint it but still white. Won't paint on the 53 numbers but a vinyl set was available must toss it on once and a while to please the kids. The Tempo is hopefully going away soon. I'm going to move my sister in law's SURF (JDM 4Runner) and bring back my Seven so at least my house doesn't look like a low end used car lot.

I think they get around 30mpg or so - not as good as one would think but not horrible either. Plus it runs on the cheap stuff I'm told. My engine is a 1.2L 40hp one.

That generation Beetle was honestly one of my favourite cars when I was a kid (admittedly because of the old Herbie movies), but whenever I see one around, I still stand in awe and jealousy. Congrats, you should have a lot of fun with this one!

Uber kewl wheels! congrats on the deal you got  :) I'm not a fan of VW but must say the classic beetle never looks cheap on a driveway. People understand it is not bought for speed, comfort or performance. Its the timeless style, looks about it and fellow drivers turning their heads to admire the show.
There is a clip on utube with 2 dudes who converted one of these to electric power. Apparently it is very easy. They took out the engine and a motor got connected right on top of the tranny, one single shaft and nothing else needed changing. I just thought you may want to know if later on you decide to have it exclusively for Sunday shopping rides.
BTW any chance to see your Lotus. Is it still in process?

Here is the Lotus Seven inspired roadster - will be done sometime this winter - towing it home with the Beetle next week to speed up progress.



An electric Beetle might be a fun project - reasonably light.

The first car I ever worked on by myself was a derelict VW Type 3 we had sitting in the yard. Made all kinds of mistakes (filled the brake system with hydraulic fluid, for one), never did get it running right, but the 'How to Keep Your VW Alive' book I got as a present to help work on it made me love mechanics as a hobby for life.

Probably the best do-it-yourself manual for a vehicle ever made.

Über cool machine, the porsche predecessor.

This brings back memories, driving around town with friends in the cheap 'foxy', 'sabun dani (soap dish)' or 'Baleela' as its fondly called in Pakistan. The brakes were pretty scary on this.
