Test Drive:
2009 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5L Wagon

2009 Volkswagen Jetta 2.5L WagonThe return of the Jetta Wagon is good news for people who want a utility vehicle that doesn't drive like one, says Editor-in-chief, Greg Wilson. The new Jetta Wagon offers decent fuel economy and a price under $30,000, he says.

I have a beige on beige 2003 VW Jetta GLS station wagon with a turbo 1.8T 180 hp engine and in terms of the design, interior, engine/power - I like mine better. The fit and finish and the choice of interior materials is amazing, that can be apart a $50 grand vehicle any time. My Jetta is only a bit smaller when compared to the latest generation. Its smooth yet powerful with almost no trace of turbo lag. I have no reason to get the newest Jetta, mine is great. German engineering. Smiley

I like it. If I were Volvo I would hope and pray no one does a v50 Jetta Wagon comparison test. Same inline 5 style engine with comperable power. Jetta may have a slight edge in intior space and looks to be finsihed just as well inside. VW can have the same or more saftey features (I don't rember side rear curatins on my V50 and Stability control only came in an outragously expensive package) and the VW is in the range of 10k less expensive once you add any of the silly crazy expensive Volvo option packages.

Me, I'd be waiting to see a 2.0T powered GTI/GLI Wagin for around 35-36K now that would be perfect.

If VW adds 4Motion or a 2.0T to the Jetta wagon then the V50 will be totally.... Wink

Is the writer 100% sure that the side-air curtain and speed sensitive steering not standard on the Jetta wagon?

I saw a new Jetta 2.5 Wagon in that same red color as the CD Review at local dealers lot here yesterday. Tan interior and that big sunroof. Very sharp package. Thumbs up

Now I have owned a DSG for 3 months I'd want the Wagon TDI DSG as well i think the DSG with appropriate programming would suit the TDI really well

My real desire is a Sapphire Blue Tiguan Comfortline/Highline, but there's no diesel, no manual with 4MOTION, and compared to the Jetta it's priced high.

The Jetta sits lower than what I wanted, but offers uber economy which is what will keep me satisfied over the long haul and if the Tiguan TDI comes the residual should be good enough I could trade without taking a massive hit. Issue with me is I want the roof but it cuts significantly into headroom... tried a Comfortline and want cloth but will see if Highline seats adjust lower for better fit. Figure I'd go Laser Blue, Blue Graphite, or White. Black looks great but I don't wash my vehicle enough to keep it so.

Note the updated TDI pages on VW.ca...

It's about time VW's site had an 'Innovation' section with more serious information!

Anyway, if those two options weren't enough I'm still keen on the EOS Love

Sir Aquaman:

It's about time VW's site had an 'Innovation' section with more serious information!

From that site, re the new VW TDI: VW stress the vehicle is no-urea.

Very significant for long-term owners- NON-urea. Heaven help the sap that has to replace one of these exhaust "Blue" systems out of warranty.

Wow. An ok package but I really don't see how this new Jetta wagon improves over my old B5 2003 Passat wagon. The size was similar, the 1.8T had more oomph, styling was better, price was similar and I had ESP. Smiley.

So it looks like VW bloated up the new Passat wagon and grew the Jetta to fll the void. In the process they put in a less powerful engine.

I still don't get why VW is selling the Golf Variant(wagon) as a Jetta in North America???

They have been selling the Golf-with-a-trunk as a Jetta for 20 years plus now so I guess it is name recognition. Supposedly, Americans think the Golf is an economy hatchback and the Jetta is a slick little German sedan with a neat wagon version.

Pricing latter and perception, plus the front is Jetta with the shield, not Golf/Rabbit without.

I['m guessing it would be too low volume.
